Moriarty Members Absent: Julie Brewer and John Bilobran Regional Ombudsman: Harvin Quidas Guests: Susie Sprenger, )SS Adult Services Supervisor Mary Busby, NHC Adult Care CAC The meeting was opened by Alton Parker, Chai an and the minutes of the Januaray meeting were read by Cay Davis, Secretasy. COITections were made to show that Denise Shaurt was preserit at the January meeting , and Faye Hoffman was absent. After welcoming new member Sue Moriarty, Harvin Quidas emphasized the need for all members to follow the visitation schedule and a m* *in of 3 members were needed to proceed with the visit. Committee members were given a copy of "Crisis Looms as Boomers Age"by Alvin Lowenberg who worries that baby boomers are ignoring a pending crisis in health care and failing to plan for their own health needs. Noted . ong Harvin's legislative highlights : explanations of DHSR(licenses/regulates adult care and nursing homes), MOST ( a itten directive for scope of treatment), and ST (a new scree * g tool for adult care and nursing homes; and STAR SYSTEM, a rated certificate system for NC Adult Care Homes based on inspections and complaints received by DHSR. Su aries were also given relating to services for the deaf and hard of hearing and the blind. Guest speaker Mary Busby gave a report on the infectious diseases shingles (herpes zoster) and C.diff(clostridium difficile). The causes, symptoms, and treatments of these two very different conditions were presented and discussed. Of particular note was the discussion of the shingles vaccine licensed in 2006. Ms. Busby also stressed the resistance of the C.diff bacteria to many antibiotics and the high risk of contamination which can be prevented by frequent hand washing with soap and wa water. Alcohol- gel and sanitizers don't kill C.diff. Facility visitation reports were as follows: Faye Hoffman-Cypress Point many needs for improvement including nail care, call bells, urine smells, and staff without n. etags; John Brett-Liberty Commons (nail care, call bells), Davis ( call bell), and Autumn Care(good report); Joan Apke-Britthaven Northehase&Wrightsville Beach, Mariner& Silverstream,-no serious concerns.
