Class IV Soil Determination Report June 8, 2016 Mr. Tom Smith TRS Holdings 420 Beasley Road Wilmington, North Carolina 28409 Reference: Report of Class IV Soil Determination 7170 Carolina Beach Road Wilmington, New Hanover County, North Carolina ECS Project No. 49. 2249 Dear Mr. Smith: ECS Carolinas, LLP (ECS) recently conducted a determination of Class IV soils for the 19.4 acre site located at 7170 Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington, New Hanover County, North Carolina. This letter, with attachments, is the report of our determination. According to the Soil Survey of New Hanover County, North Carolina, Cass IV soils are a capability class of soils that indicate limitations for practical use. Class IV is described as soils that have severe limitations that make them unsuitable for cultivations. Class IV soils are defined by the Technical Report No.9, Wilmington – New Hanover County Comprehensive Planning Program as soil series Dorovan (DO), Johnston (JO), Pamlico Muck (Pm), and Tidal Marsh (TM). The Technical Report No.9 also specifies that the groundwater elevation should be encountered at six inches below the existing grade elevation or has standing water. The county soils map illustrates that soil series Pm covers approximately 1/3 of the site, as is concentrated in the center portion of the site (Figure 1). Field Observations On June 7, 2016, ECS conducted an exploration of the subsurface soil conditions at the site to determine the presence or absence of Class IV soils (Figure 1). ECS explored the subsurface soil and groundwater conditions by advancing a hand auger boring into the existing ground surface at multiple random locations across the site. ECS concentrated the borings within the mapped area of the Pm. The soils within the Pm area were observed to be a black to gray fine sand from 0 to 24 inches without encountering the groundwater table. These soils appeared most similar to series Lynn Haven fine sand (LY) which is mapped on the southeast corner of the property. LY is described by the soil survey as black fine sand 18 inches thick with a gray fine sand subsurface layer that is 6 inches thick. There is a Pocosin mapped in the northwest corner of the site and there is a jurisdictional wetland located within that area. The rest of the site is mapped as a soil series Kureb sand 1 to 8 percent slopes (Kr) and soil series LY. The soils observed appeared to closely represent the soils series indicated on the map. 7170 Carolina Beach Road Wilmington, New Hanover County, North Carolina ECS Project # 49. 2249 June 7, 2016 KBW Figure 1– County Soils Map Provided by: Southern Environmental Group, Inc.
