Adjournment NEW HANOVER COUNTY PARKS ADVISORY BOARD PAGE 1 REGULAR MEETING FEBRUARY 22, 2022 ASSEMBLY The Parks Advisory Board held its regular meeting on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at the Airlie Cottage. Present Via Microsoft Teams: John Hinnant (presiding), , and Pete Wildeboer. Absent: Nicholas Leger and Malik Shabazz. Guest. Colin Hackman, Steve Morrissey, Rex Buford (Via Teams) Staff: Tara Duckworth, Tanya Gurganious, Andy Johnson, and Jodi Rich. WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES The meeting was called to order by John Hinnant who asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the January meeting. The following motion was presented: st MOTION: Nick Leger MOVED; SECONDED by Joe Irrera, that the minutes of the December 1 meeting be approved. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. 1. Voice of the Customer. Colin Hackman shared information regarding triathlons and other events he organizes and manages these through his business: ItsGoTime. (www.its-go-time.com). They have 45 races within the Wilmington area each year as well as 20 or so in other municipalities. The largest of those races is the Wilmington Marathon which will take place in a couple of weeks. It is a big economic driver for the area as approximately 4,000 people come to the race with 65% staying overnight. Most of the events are owned/operated by area non-profits. There are 6 main events that his company directly manages and puts on., 50% of proceeds go to local nonprofits. types of events. He would like to see better connectivity of bridges for pedestrian access during these races. There are 4 races he operates in Long Leaf Park. He shared that the parks have been awesome, and he appreciates the time and thought put into maintenance. 2. Top of Mind Topics. John asked if anyone had any top-of-mind topics to discuss. Rex Buford asked about the progress of Hanover Pines Park. Tara shared that the permit is not in place yet. However, she did talk to the head engineer at Paramounte Engineering, and they are working on that. They did get out bid documents in order so we can move as soon as the permit is received. 3. Director/Staff Q&A. Staff provided the following updates: still working on lighting t Long Leaf Park. Andy shared that all the Long Leaf projects are completed (ninja warrior, adult, and youth basketball court). The lighting for tennis courts have been replaced. Will be putting out bids for the resurfacing of the tennis courts which we hope to have completed in March or April. A question was asked about where we are in the budget process. Tara shared that there is a budget retreat for the County Commissioners this month. Nothing new was included. Some of the items requested were the conversion of tennis courts to pickle ball courts at Arrowhead Park and Smith Creek Park design (Phase 2).
