Z - .~ 'Ci61 A RESOLUTION OF THE NEW HANOVER COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS WHEREAS, Coming Incorporated established a resister manufacturing facility in New Hanover County, North Carolina in 1966; and WHEREAS, Coming Incorporated invented the world's first low-loss optical fiber in 1970 and is the only remaining United States owned fiber manufacturer; and WHEREAS, Corning Incorporated's New Hanover County, North Carolina fiber facility was the world's first fiber manufacturing plant and today has the largest capacity in the industry; and WHEREAS, resister manufacturing was relocated to Bradford, Pennsylvania and the initial optical fiber manufacturing equipment was installed in the New Hanover County facility in 1978 and the first low-loss optical fiber was produced in New Hanover County in 1979; and WHEREAS, Coming Incorporated employs several hundred employees in the New Hanover County facility and manufactures a full portfolio of fiber products to meet the demands of different network applications from the desktop to the ocean; and WHEREAS, continued excellence in manufacturing process control, automation and productivity in New Hanover County allows Coming Incorporated to remain the highest quality and lowest cost producer of fiber in the world. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners recognizes and expresses its appreciation to Coming Incorporated for forty outstanding years as a leading manufacturer in New Hanover County. Schult, Clerk to the Board d ~EI h [!~ -lIJ 1 J X Boo. {l. 3 PROCLAMATION BY THE NEW HANOVER COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH OCTOBER 2006 WHEREAS, domestic violence transcends all ethnic, racial and socioeconomic boundaries, weakening 'the very core of our community; and WHEREAS, the effects of domestic violence are far-reaching, forcing battered women and their children to seek safe shelter, law enforcement prosecutors to expend valuable resources and families and friends to grieve at the loss of life; and WHEREAS, 1,507 adults and children sought safe shelter or counseling at the Wilmington Domestic Violence Shelter and Services in the year 2005; and WHEREAS, the Wilmington Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. works toward the elimination of. violence and oppression against women and their children and provides emergency support and services for victims and survivors of domestic abuse; and WHEREAS, on Wednesday, September 4,2002, G]adys Bryant, an employee of New Hanover County for more than two decades, was killed in an act of domestic violence exhibiting to all her coworkers and friends, the prevalence of domestic violence and its consequences; and WHEREAS, many other women throughout New Hanover County and the United States find themselves in abusive relationships and need to find security and an end to their physical and menta] attacks; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL YED that the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners refuses to tolerate domestic violence in any form and wishes to create a society that promotes strong values, fosters a safe and loving home environment for every family, and encourages our citizens to redouble their efforts to obliterate the problem of domestic violence from our families, our neighborhoods and our community. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners proclaim October 2006 Domestic Violence Awareness Month in New Hanover County, Adopted this, the 2nd day of October 2006. If- PROCLAMATION BY THE NEW HANOVER COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Fire Prevention Week October 8-14, 2006 WHEREAS, New Hanover County is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our county; and WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and WHEREAS, the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFP A) has documented through its research that cooking is the leading cause of home fires. One out of three home fires begins in the kitchen - more than any other place in the home; and WHEREAS, New Hanover County first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and WHEREAS, New Hanover County residents are responsive to _ public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and WHEREAS, using proper care when cooking will have a positive effect on the home fire problem; and WHEREAS, each cooking fire that is prevented in New Hanover County IS an opportunity to prevent painful injury and costly property damage; and WHEREAS, the 2006 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Prevent Cooking Fires: Watch What You Heat", effectively serves to remind us all of the simple actions we can take to stay safer from fire during Fire Prevention Week and year-round. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners that October 8-14, 2006 be recognized as Fire Prevention Week and urge all the people of New Hanover County to heed the important safety messages of Fire Prevention Week 2006, and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of New Hanover County Fire and Emergency Services. S STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA COUNTY OF NEW HANOVER BEFORE THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS IN THE MATTER OF RENAMING AN UNNAMED SERVICE ROAD TO OLD MARKET STREET ORDINANCE It appearing to the Board of County Commissioners of New Hanover County that consideration has been given to the naming of Old Market Street, located in the Porters Neck community, specifically between near Porters Neck Road and extending Northeast approximately 4600 feet. A public hearing was held on Monday, October 2nd, 2006 at which time all persons were heard on the question of whether or not the naming would be in the public interest; and it further appearing that notice of said hearing was transmitted to all resident owners and prominently posted in at least two (2) locations along said road; and published in the Star News local newspaper, and the Board of County Commissioners is of the opinion that said road in New Hanover County should be named and the naming of same is in the public interest, the description of which is delineated on the attached map exhibit. NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS ORDAINED AND DECREED that the above described road is hereby named Old Market Street. IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that a copy of this ordinance be recorded in the office of the Register of Deeds of New Hanover County, North Carolina, and that notice of the action taken by the Board of County Commissioners be transmitted to the postmaster having jurisdiction over the road, the North Carolina Board of Transportation and to any city within five (5) miles of said road in accordance with N.C. General Statues 153A-240.
