The meeting was called to order by Chairman Dean Gattone at 4:22 PM. Approval of Minutes: Lowell Soucie Three corrections to the April minutes were noted: Correct Dean Gattone’s name under Absences; correct Jonathan Barfield’s name in bullet three under Chairman’s Report; change date of next meeting to May 19, 2010 in last sentence on page two. A motion to accept the April 21, 2010 minutes with noted changes was made by Bill Terrell and seconded by Stuart Ball. Motion passed without opposition. Consideration of Absences: Lowell Soucie Jonathan Barfield, Jr., Sandra Sheridan, John Haley, Jack Mills, Dawn McKernan, Jack Bragg and Ruth Haas were noted as absent. Chairman’s Report: Dean Gattone Board members were reminded to encourage individuals to apply for the open board positions. The Board Recruitment Grid was reviewed and noted that area code 28401 is not current represented on the board. The museum is expected to see a $20,000 cut in the FY10-11 budget. The staff will have six furlough days and their personal leave accrual reinstated in the proposed budget. Associates Report: Tom Cunningham No report. Collection Report: John Haley No report. The chart depicting comparison of admission fees for other local attractions was reviewed and discussed by the board. A motion was made by Bill Terrell and seconded by Beth Dawson to table the decision of increased fees for a future meeting when more board members present. Motion passed without opposition. Facilities: Bill Terrell Furniture for the courtyard has been ordered with funds donated by a Museum member specifically for the furniture. Education/Accreditation Committee: Dean Gattone There was some discussion regarding the friend-raising breakfast on April 26, 2010, however, the board decided to table the topic until Jack Mills returns to give a full report. AAM has changed its policy regarding duration of accreditation from ten years to fifteen years. Museum Update: Jenean Todd The lecture by Todd Jorgenson on conservation of wood is scheduled for Thursday night, May 20, 2010 at 7:00 PM. Jenean reviewed the STEM partnership with Time Warner Cable which was discussed in length at the April 2010 board meeting. NOAA will host a hurricane awareness program at the Museum on June 12, 2010. The Museum has received a grant from IMLS for the conservation of the Civil War uniform. The Museum has been seeing a large number of year end school groups. The Museum of Forestry is planning an expansion. The MOF director, board members and staff visited staff of the Cape Fear Museum on April 18, 2010 for discussion on the new Cape Fear Stories exhibit. AAM’s 2010 annual conference will offer virtual attendance for two days this year at a cost of $199. Cape Fear Museum will be participating. Museum News-magazine Discussion: Jacob Rudolph Input from board – o Place magazine in various locations where it can be easily accessible to general public. o There are advantages and disadvantages to publishing bi-annually. o Place copies at the Chamber and CVB locations. o Place magazine on web as a PDF. PDF. o In trying various means of distribution must commit to a year to obtain a good test market result. Old/New Business Beth Dawson informed the board that she has notified the Deputy Clerk to the Board of Commissioners that she wishes to be reappointed to the Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board. There being no further business, a motion to adjourn was made by Lowell Soucie and seconded by Beth Dawson. The meeting adjourned at 4:50 PM. The next board meeting will be on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 4:00 PM in the Williston Auditorium, Cape Fear Museum.
