The meeting was called to order by Chairman Dean Gattone at 4:03 PM. Approval of Minutes: Lowell Soucie A motion to accept the July 15, 2009, minutes was made by Jack Mills, seconded by Jack Bragg, and approved unanimously. Consideration of Absences: Lowell Soucie Dawn McKernan, Bill Terrell and John Haley were excused absences. Chairman’s Report: Dean Gattone Dean introduced and welcomed Sandra Sheridan, as a new member of the Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board. Dean asked Ruth to update the board on the upcoming webinar scheduled for September 9, 2009. Report on Museum Education Practices & Planning: Rebecca Dotterer Rebecca presented a PowerPoint presentation on current and planned education programs for the Museum. The Museum Education Master Plan Executive Summary distributed to board members covered the following: o The Museum Education Department philosophy is to engage, explore, explain, expand and evaluation o Nature of educational experiences o Program development o Program audiences o New programs for FY10. Document denotes committee chair, members and duties. There being no objections to committee assignments and duties, the committees for 2009-10 stand as: o Long Range Planning: Executive Board-Dean Gattone, Stuart Ball, Lowell Soucie, Bill Terrell o Facilities: Bill Terrell (Chair), Jonathan Barfield, Jr. o Collections: John Haley (Chair), Linda Chapman, Lowell Soucie, Beth Dawson o Programs/Accreditation: Jack Mills (Chair), Jack Bragg, Sandra Sheridan, Dawn McKernan Director’s Update: Ruth Haas Funding for Forest Exhibit – Funding is shaping up nicely. The cost is down to $310,000 with possibly an overall budget of $345,000. $277,000 is already committed and $42,736 has been pledged. Grassroots Sciences Funding FY2010 – Ruth attended the Grassroots Sciences Museums Collaborative meeting in Greensboro August 15-18. The State Legislature reduced the Grassroots Sciences funding by 20% for FY2010. There may be additional reductions. Ruth met with Ken Howard, a native Wilmingtonian, who is the new Director of the NC History Museum on August 19 in Raleigh. Ruth attended the “Down Home Carolina Exhibit” meeting in Raleigh The exhibit is scheduled to be at Cape Fear Museum October – December 2011. We will need to raise approximately $5,000 to bring it to the Museum, however, we will have some assistance from the Jewish Heritage Foundation to accomplish that goal. Old/New Business: Dean Gattone The joint board meeting of the Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board and the Cape Fear Museum Associates, Inc. Board will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 4:00 PM in the Williston Auditorium. There being no further business a motion to adjourn was made by Jack Mills and seconded by Beth Dawson. The meeting adjourned at 5:13 PM. The next board meeting will be on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 4:00 PM in the Williston Auditorium, Cape Fear Museum.
