The meeting was called to order by Vice Chairman, Dean Gattone at 4:03 PM. Approval of Minutes: John Haley Motion for approval with no corrections made by John Haley and seconded by Bob Jones. Motion passed. Consideration of Absences: John Haley Bill Terrell, Dawn McKernan and Linda Chapman were approved as absent. Collection Report: Lowell Soucie Revision of the Collection Policy is in process. Budget Review: Stuart Ball Budget is due to New Hanover County Budget Department on February 4, 2008 with 􀁄􀀃􀀔􀀓􀀈􀀃􀁕􀁈􀁇􀁘􀁆􀁗􀁌􀁒􀁑􀀃􀁌􀁌􀁑􀀃􀁒􀁓􀁈􀁕􀁄􀁗􀁌􀁑􀁊􀀃􀁆􀁒􀁖􀁗􀁖􀀑􀀃􀀃􀀷􀁋􀁈􀀃􀀰􀁘􀁖􀁈􀁘􀁐􀂶􀁖􀀃􀁒􀁓􀁈􀁕􀁄􀁗􀁌􀁑􀁊􀀃􀁅􀁘� �􀁊􀁈􀁗􀀃􀁌􀁖􀀃􀁅􀁈􀁌􀁑􀁊􀀃reviewed to determine where the reduction can be made. Ruth Haas distributed a proposed 2008 budget-in-progress which she reviewed. She then addressed questions from board members. The final proposed budget as submitted will be distributed at the February board meeting. The Long Range Planning Committee will assume the responsibility of assisting the Museum Director with budget preparation. March 1, 2008 was chosen. Facility Master Plan Questions Answered: Jack Mills Currently the plan is 30 parking spaces short. The number of parking spaces is administered by the City of Wilmington Land Development Code. The facility needs list includes an in-house generator, new freight elevator and improved loading dock. Jerome Fennel, NHC Property Management Director, was in the Museum on January 16, 2008 with a consultant to assess these additions and improvements. A proposal and cost estimate will be forthcoming from NHC Property Management. 􀀧􀁌􀁕􀁈􀁆􀁗􀁒􀁕􀂶􀁖􀀃􀀵􀁈􀁓􀁒􀁕􀁗􀀝􀀃􀀃􀀵􀁘􀁗􀁋􀀃􀀫􀁄􀁄􀁖 Ruth will be in China in March to participate in an exchange program through the NC Grassroots Science Museums Collaborative and NC Science, Mathematics, and Technology Center with the Beijing Association for Science and Technology (BAST). In preliminary preparation for the trip she will be judging high school science competition in Greensboro in January 2008. Ruth spoke to the Wilmington Rotary East Club on January 14, 2008 and will be speaking to the Wilmington Rotary Central Club after her return from China. 􀀷􀁋􀁈􀀃􀀲􀀦􀀨􀀤􀀱􀀃􀁈􀁛􀁋􀁌􀁅􀁌􀁗􀀃􀁌􀁖􀀃􀁆􀁒􀁐􀁌 􀁑􀁊􀀃􀁗􀁒􀁊􀁈􀁗􀁋􀁈􀁕􀀃􀁑􀁌􀁆􀁈􀁏􀁜􀀃􀁇􀁘􀁈􀀃􀁗􀁒􀀃􀁖􀁗􀁄􀁉􀁉􀂶􀁖􀀃􀁋􀁄􀁕􀁇􀀃􀁚􀁒rk and collaboration with UNCW Center for Marine Science personnel and exhibit vendors. Associates Report: Janine Powell The 2008 Gala is scheduled for Saturday, February 2, 2008 and is in preparation. Board members were encouraged to buy their tickets and invite family and friends. Volunteers are needed to assist with decorating and clean-up. Auction items are now being accepted and board members were asked to support by donating items or obtaining donations from Wilmington businesses, etc. The OCEAN exhibit opening reception for CFMA members will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2008 from 6:00PM 􀂱 8:00PM. Dr. Dan Baden, Director of the the UNCW Center for Marine Science will be the guest speaker. End of year appeal garnered $4,725.00. Giving statements for 2007 are being mailed. This is the first time ever statements have been sent to donors. Obtaining sponsors for Pi Day. Sylvan Learning Center has committed $500.00 and this the first time they have sponsored Pi Day. Requests have also gone out to Kumon and Mathnasium. The new website will go live this week. There being no further business Jack Mills entertained a motion to adjourn. The motion was seconded by John Haley. The meeting adjourned at 4:55 PM. The next board meeting will be on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 4:00 PM in the Williston Auditorium at the Cape Fear Museum.
