WHEREAS, The Board of Canmissioners of New Hanover
unique qualities of Masonboro Island, and
County recognize the
WHEREAS, Masonboro Island is an unspoiled Barrier Island on the North
Carolina Coast in close proximity to a rapidly growing urban area; and
WHEREAS, the Island provides important passive and active recreational
opportunities for County residents and all citizens of North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, Masonboro Island offers irreplaceable research and educational
opportunities for students and scientists, particularly at the University of
North Carolina at Wilmington; and
WHEREAS, the County's Policies for Growth and Developnent have included the
Island in a Conservation land class which prohibits developnent activity that
results in damage or alteration to the natural functions and because the Island
is extremely vulnerable to hurricane hazards;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of cormnissioners of New
Hanover County unanimously support the preservation of Masonboro Island in its
natural state and the continued efforts of the Office of Coastal' 'Management for
designation and acquisition as an Estuarine Sanctuary;
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Commissioners of New Hanover County
desire to donate to the State the remaining acreage owned by the County
(approximately 15 acres) if such lands can be used as a local match to acquire
additional Federal funds for preservation.
