12-19-20121 Board Members Present: Tucker Stevens Beth Dawson Stuart Borrett Jack Mills Ben Woodruff Dan Owen Nancy Pritchett Absent: Gwen Brown, Linda Chapman, Nancy Ballard Cox, Sandra Sheridan, & Allen Trask Staff Present: Ruth Haas, Director Barbara Rowe, Curator The Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 in the Williston Auditorium at the Cape Fear Museum. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Jack Mills at 4:00 PM. Approval of Minutes: Jack Mills A motion to accept the October 17, 2012 minutes was made, seconded and approved without opposition. Consideration of Absences: Jack Mills Gwen Brown, Linda Chapman, Nancy Ballard Cox, Sandra Sheridan, and Allen Trask all indicated their inability to attend this meeting and have been excused. Chairman’s Report: Jack Mills Chairman Mills reported that the legislative breakfast held on Monday, December 10th at the Children’s Museum was very well received. Mr. Mills encouraged follow-up with the legislators and to get them into the museum at every opportunity. Associates Report: Ben Woodruff Rebecca Philpott had resigned as Administrative Assistant at the end of October and in lieu of replacing that administrative position the Associates board is now pursuing contracting with an outside accounting firm to handle the financials. An intern from UNCW’s MPA program is also going to be hired to assist with the membership database and events. Vintage and Vine will be the annual fundraiser for the Associates. This event will be held on Friday, February 22nd from 7-10 pm here at the museum and will feature stations with food and wine pairings. Sponsorships are being sold and planning is well underway. Mr. Woodruff encouraged Advisory board members to please consider sponsorship and attendance at the event. Collections Committee: Stuart Borrett The Collections Committee recommends approval of the proposed lists of acquisitions sent out in the board packet. A motion was made, seconded, and approved without opposition to approve the acquisitions. Owen Nancy Pritchett Tucker Stevens Jonathan Barfield, NHC Commissioner Ex-officio: Ben Woodruff CFMA, Inc. 2 Program Committee: Linda Chapman No report this month Strategic Planning Committee: Tucker Stevens Mr. Stevens reported that the committee will look at the agreement between the museum and the Williston alumni association. We need to increase communication with the alumni association, communicate a clear understanding with an agreement and establish a possible endowment. Director’s Update: Ruth Haas The museum has been award the N.C. Federation of Historical Societies preservation award for the work done to conserve significant Civil War artifacts. This month the staff is working hard on the FY 13-14 budget and aligning goals, priorities and funds with the NHC Strategic Map. Mrs. Haas presented a PowerPoint on the proposed museum budget for FY 13-14. The museum’s education department is moving forward with the plans to host field trips for the program Forces in Motion for every first grader in New Hanover County schools. This program has received underwriting from Wells Fargo and Eschelman Foundations. Old/New Business: Jack Mills Mystery at the Museum will be held on Saturday, January 26th from 1-4 pm. A motion was made that the meeting adjourn. With unanimous consent, the meeting ended at 5:20 PM. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 4:00 PM in the Williston Auditorium, Cape Fear Museum.
