Personal Property Assessment ~~ 60127
Dear Mr Powell
Pursuant to our conversations we were informed by you that our
company owed taxes on additional personal property not listed for the
year 1976 In response to your letter of June 21, 1977, it was our under-
standing that this listing would be made for us by your office and that we
would then have a chance to appear before the New Hanover County Board of
Commissioners to request a waiver of the listing penalty
As I have explained to you in our previous conversations it is al-
most impossible for the J W Murchison Company in the year 1976 to accurately
list for personal property tax purposes our inventory at the close of the
year A great deal of our merchandise which goes into inventory comes in
in the month of December in preparation for our annual show of merchandise
which is held during the beginning of the coming year and for early sales
Therefore it makes it very difficult for us from a business standpoint to
accurately gauge our inventory at the close of the year on December 31
It is later on in the year before we actually know what our inventory
figure was for that particular period of time and this is the reason for
the discrepancey in our 1976 personal property listing
We have in all aspects tried to be a good corporate citizen of
this county and would therefore request that you submit to the Board our
application for a waiver of the penalty on the additional assessed personal
property for the year 1976
Very truly yours,
J W MURCHISON COMPANY
