October 18, 1976
Mr Peter R Davis, Chairman
New Hanover County Board of Commissioners
County Administration Building
320 Chestnut Street
Wilmington, North Carolina 28401
Dear Chairman Davis
We are striving very hard for our children to be trained to be self-sufficient, to be
able to support theirselves and in return pay their taxes and put money back into their
County and State Why should these children have to live on Social Security the rest
of their lives when they themselves want to be useful to their community
This can only be done by removing the barriers that now exist for all handicaped people
There are very few schools that these children can get into for education or. social
functions
There is no way for a physically handicapped child to get into our public library for
personal enjoyment or for research purposes
There are few doctor and dental offices that have ramps for these children to enter
for health reasons
The majoxity of the physically handicap children have to go to the hospital several
times a week or to the Orthopedic Clinic It is very hard for these parents to get
through the heavy glass doors pushing a wheelchair
Right now it is not important for these children to get in the Police Station or
Carolina Power and Light or the Post Office or the Tax Office but how are these
children or children born every day going to get into these buildings to apply for
jobs or do their civic duties if these barriers are not removed
It could be said that these children are not physically handicapped, but are defective
I appeal to you as a parent of a handicapped child to please help us remove these
barriers before you or one of your loved ones are faced with these heartaches, that our
loved one s are now faced with.
We as parents cannot always be with our defective children, but there is some one who
never leaves their sides and goes with them in their wheel chairs and this person
says, "In so much as you have done it unto the lease of one of these my children, you
have done it unto me "
Thank you,
Parents of Handicap Children
