Arlene Burns has retired. Phyllis Smith, NE branch manager, has relocated to the Main library reference department. David Paynter is currently interviewing applicants for the NE branch manager position. There was significant interest in the William S. Powell (Jan 14) book signing; well over 100 attending. The State Library will no longer sponsor Quiz Bowl after this year. The New Hanover County Public Library will have a local quiz bowl this year, but will not continue the program beyond 2007. David has been appointed Legislative Chair of the North Carolina Public Library Trustees Association. Friend’s Report: John Danylyk, FOL President, reported on the monthly Friends meeting. They have appointed people for all board positions and have 439 members netting almost $7,000 in dues. Dennis Fuller and Rita Lewis will co-chair the book sale, which is scheduled for April 21-26. The volunteer luncheon will be held in mid-May. Old Business: Bond Referendum: David Paynter reported that the Library Bond Issue is being discussed between the County Commissioners and Bruce Shell, County Manager. The issue is complex, but is being discussed with a view of relocating the Myrtle Grove Library at the Battle Park site. Prior to this, John Gangemi, John Danylyk and David Paynter met with Bruce Shell and Pat Melvin on January 5th to review the status of the Library portion of the Bond Referendum. The meeting was productive, very informative and opened an avenue for David Paynter and Neal Lewis, Parks Director, to meet and report back to Bruce Shell regarding the viability of replacing the Myrtle Grove facility at the Battle Park site. David Paynter and Neal Lewis have met and agree to move forward together with a Library facility on parkland at Battle Park. The Library Advisory Board continues to support Myrtle Grove Library being located in a larger facility in the Myrtle Grove area. The park/library idea was highly appealing to board members. The Board indicated little support for a major fundraiser or locating the replacement library in a strip shopping mall (this would negate the use of bond money for the project). The Cape Fear Museum fundraising study indicates the difficulties raising money for county departments. Library website: In two weeks all county webpages will be conformed to uniformity. The library pages are currently being updated. A sample of the webpage was distributed. John Danylyk commented on the Cape Fear Museum’s webpage and how attractive it is. They contract with an outside company. Roberta Penn inquired about the Homework Help feature, and David Paynter will inquire about delays in access to this site. New Business: Trustee Conference: David Paynter reported on this meeting, which was held in Pinehurst, NC and the interesting subjects presented. New Hanover County was able to make a brief presentation on our Centennial programs, and accepted an award for these events. Mary Boone, State Librarian, was present at the meeting. John Gangemi commented on the Gaston County library, which requires library patrons to prove citizenship. Library Day in Raleigh – April 26: Reminder for those who wish to attend. The Library Foundation is sponsoring the author, John Berendt on January 19 at 6:30 PM at Thalian Hall, and over 300 hundred tickets have been sold. A reception for $100 ticket holders will be held at the Main library after the event. The meeting adjourned at 3:52 PM.
