Director’s Report: At the Public Libraries annual meeting, David Paynter was appointed as chair of the legislation committee. He will represent libraries at the State during Library Week of April 17 for increased funding. He will be requesting additional funds for Tutor.com. David Paynter has talked with Dave Weaver at the county manager’s office regarding the changes in the new county web page design and how it has affected customer service for library patrons. David ?David will discuss this further with Leslie Stanfield, IT Director. The County Commissioners discussed library funding at their retreat. A Northchase developer has approached the library about a joint project. David Paynter will meet with him. David has also spoken with Tim Owens, Carolina Beach Town Manager, regarding library options there. The additional parking design at the Northeast Regional Library reveals an additional 55 spaces. The board reviewed the layout of the parking lot. Friends Report: John Danylyk reported that the FOL would support library programs from membership revenue; the book sale dates are Apr 21-26; the Volunteer Luncheon will be May 24. John served on the Quiz Bowl committee with Ben Steelman and Elizabeth Stanfield-Maddox. Committee Reports: No reports, however John Gangemi did request that Dean Gattone and the Policy Committee (Dean Gattone, Conrad Luhmann, Jacqueline O’Grady & Elizabeth Bryan) examine the by-laws to ensure they are in line with the newly approved library policies. Old Business: Bond Referendum David Paynter distributed the requested budget; highlights include requests for several new positions to replace those in previous cutback years; plus a new library associate for the Northeast and Myrtle Grove branches to assist with the population increases. We have also requested additional temporary funding to open the branches more hours. The operational budget requested is an increase to include additional contracted services to cover materials processing. This would free up staff that process materials to cover library service points as needed. The supply budget includes a request for a newly designed area for the young adults. The book budget has not been increased at this time. The County has required the library to budget any trust or funds from the book sale as part of the library budget. If the funds are not spent from the escrow account, it does return to the library’s budget to use the next year. An additional $10,000 was requested for signage for the Northeast and Main libraries. There are a number of items requested for IT to include library tags for materials for the Northeast RFID system. Library Website This continues to be updated; the new County standardized format for the Library web site has resulted in loss of functionality and does not provide user-friendly operation for external (patron) users. The Board understands this is being addressed and hopefully functionality will be restored to previous levels of smooth operation. New Business: Library Day – Raleigh, April 17: David Paynter will be developing a packet of materials for distribution and the library prints have been well received in the past. Chambers’ Trust: Dr. Samual Chambers, UNCW professor, set up a trust ten years ago, and now that the trust has matured, proceeds will be used to purchase library materials. The trust is being certified as a non-profit trust. Any income will be deposited into the escrow account. Staffing: Alice Sheridan, Consumer Health Librarian, is in the hospital with pneumonia. Rebecca Taylor, Myrtle Grove branch librarian is retiring March 30, and her position has been advertised. Paige Owens has been promoted to Northeast Branch Manager, and her position has been posted. Jerry Drye, Circulation Librarian, will be retiring May 1, and he is recovering from shoulder surgery. The next meeting will be Thursday, March 15. Meeting adjourned at 3:29 PM.
