C., to m nstruct a fishing pier in the Atlantic Ocean at Wilmington Beachl between North Carolina Avenue and Tennessee Avenue, 25 feet wide with a total length of 1,000 feet, ex- tending seaward approximately 880 feet beyond the mean lotir water line. 47 A road report was received £rom the State Highway and Public Works Commission - Mr. C. Heide Trask, Commission- , er Third Division, which is composed of Brunswick, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow,Pender and 5ampson Counties, showing 42.04 miles of road worlc and five bridges had been finished in this Division during the past month. In New Ksnover County, State forces graded, drained and top soiled the following 24=foot wide roads and their lengths: Near 1Jhiskey Creek, 2/3 miles; an3 near Beclcer's Supply Compaiy, 0/15mile. The 22-foot wide road near Maffitt Village, was graded, drained an3 top soiled for 0.4 milo. ' The County Corunissioriers stood by their action of Jarnzary 18, 1954, in not objecting to the United 5tates Dis- itrict Engineer granting a permit to Center Pier Fishing Corporation to construct a fishir.g pier in the Atlantic Ocean at Wilmington Beach, on opinion of the County Attorney that the County Board has no legal right to object to the construction of the picr. No action was taken, however, twenty (20) or more persons were present, but the only objection to the construction of the pier was receipt of a letter from Dr. Edwin N. Booker, a property owner at Wilmington Beach, a resident o£ Selma, N. C. Mr. Glenn Ttrcker of Carolina Beach presented a letter from the Wilmington Beach Investment Company, written to the District Engineer, stating that the Company has gone on record favoring the permit for the construction of a£ishing pier as applied for by the Center Fishing Pier Corporation, which it is believed will result in greater financial benefits to all property owners within the area, and will attract more tourists to the fishing grounds of 14eU! Doclcery, County Attorney of Mecklenburg County for having furnished him with an outline of the p m cedure followed in connection with our Charity Hospitalization. A letter was received from Mr. Tom Lawther, Jr., Secretary of the Wilmington Civitan Club, advising that the ? Club at its meeting held January 13, 1954, went on record, unanimously, favoring the continued operation of John ? C. Wessell 1lxberculosis Sanatorium; as a worthy and essential project. . Letters of inquiry were received from Hunnicutt & Associates oF St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mr, Joseph H. Quigley of the Cole-Iayer-Trumble Company of Charlotte, N. Notice of final decision by the State Board of Allotment and Appeal, on sppeal from the County Welfare Board in the following Cases were received: Sarah King Parker, 505 Walnut Street, ADC appeal: Issue involved, termination of payment because children a? were no longer deprived of parental support. A report was received from the Board of Health showing extra food inspection, and reported not less than thirty #epAy ? (30) places inspected per month. Pamphlets on ABC Control in North Carolina were received and distributed. LS- With reference to a request o£ representatives of the Williston High School Band Boosters Club, January 25, 1954, for an appropriation for transportation expense for the band members to participate in a band clinic at Greens- boro and Asheville, wnich was received for investigation as to funds available. The Chairman reported the Advertising F1znd has been exhausted by disbursements of $3,686.16 to various organizations? plus $500.00 each ear-marked for the Azalea Festival, the Azalea Golf Tournament and State llssociation of County Commissioners' Convention. The total budget appropriation was set at $5,000.00. Mr. Dwight McEtaen submitted for the Board's consideration, a statement of his net annual income received for his services as Court Reporter for riew Hanover County, with the view of an increase in compensation allowed hitn by the County. Upon motion thesame wasreceived for consideration in next year's budget.
