The Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, March
20, 2013 in the Williston Auditorium at the Cape Fear Museum. The meeting was called to order
by Chairman Jack Mills at 4:00 PM.
Approval of Minutes: Jack Mills
A motion to accept the February 2013 minutes as amended was made, seconded and
approved without opposition.
Consideration of Absences: Jack Mills
Gwen Brown, Linda Chapman, Dan Owen and Allen Trask all indicated their inability to
attend this meeting and have been excused.
Chairman’s Report: Jack Mills
Mr. Mills reported that on April 22, 2013 board member Tucker Stevens will present the
Museum’s annual update to the New Hanover County Commissioners. Mr. Mills
encouraged the other board members to attend the meeting to show support for Mr.
Stevens and the Museum.
Associates Report: Ben Woodruff
Mr. Woodruff thanked everyone for all of their support of the Vintage and Vine
fundraiser. Mr. Woodruff indicated that event would net about $7700.00.
The CFM Associates board recognizes and supports the Museum’s need for a full-time
Development Coordinator. Mrs. Haas has requested the position be funded in the
Museum’s FY 13-14 budget. The position is still included in the budget at this time and
the county has requested that Mrs. Haas come up with a set of benchmarks and measures
of success for this position. Mrs. Haas reported that she is working with the Museum’s
budget analyst to supply the requested information.

Collections Committee: Stuart Borrett
The Collections Committee recommended approval of the proposed list of acquisitions
sent out in the board packet. A motion was made, seconded, and approved without
opposition to approve the acquisitions.

Barbara Rowe, Museum Curator, gave a detailed update on the artifacts included in the
board packet that are currently being conserved.
Program Committee: Nancy Ballard Cox
PI Days was held March 12, 13 and 14 and served over 1100 students and 280 educators
in the three half day sessions.
History Day was held March 19 and had 132 students participating in various projects.
The Museum is collaborating with the Cape Fear Camera Club and will host
“Impressions of the Cape Fear” an exhibit of handpicked photographs taken by club
members. The exhibit opens April 9, 2013 with a reception from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
The Museum is collaborating with several local organizations to host the NC Science
Festival’s Statewide Star Party on Friday, April 5, 2013 at Airlie Gardens. The event
begins at 7:00 pm.
The Museum had previously received a $1000 donation from PPD that will be used to
cover the costs of the bus fees for 4 Title I schools to attend the Forces in Motion
program. These students would have been unable to attend the program without this
additional support.
Strategic Planning Committee: Tucker Stevens
Mr. Stevens reported in conjunction with the N.C. Science Festival that a science themed
bar trivia night will be held on Wednesday, April 10 at 8:00 pm.
Director’s Update: Ruth Haas
The FY 13-14 NHC budget workshops are on-going. The request for a full-time
Development Coordinator position is still in the budget.
The request for proposal for the $500,000 parks bond has gone out and several teams
have shown interest in submitting bids. Bid packages are due to the Museum on
Wednesday, April 10, 2013.
Two grant applications are currently in progress. The Museum is submitting a letter of
interest for the Win Grant. The Museum is also re-submitting for the Burroughs
Welcome grant. This is a 3-year grant to fund a middle school junior interpreter program.

“Fragments of War”, Patricia Ewer, Conservator Talk, 7:00 pm in the Williston
Auditorium.
A motion was made that the meeting adjourn. With unanimous consent, the meeting ended at
5:10 PM. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 4:00 PM in the
Williston Auditorium, Cape Fear Museum.
