The interview panel consisted of the following:
Jerome Fennel, New Hanover County Director of Property Management
Andy Johnson, Assistant Director for New Hanover County Parks with oversight of
grounds maintenance
Bill Terrell, Museum Advisory Board member
Ruth Haas, Museum Director
Adrienne Garwood, Museum Exhibits Manager
John Timmerman, Museum Exhibits Designer
Barbara Rowe, Museum Curator
Jan Davidson, Museum Historian
Based on the proposal and interviews, the majority agreed to award the contract to Coastal Land
Design. The reasons for the final decision:
The team that they brought to the table was stronger in critical areas to the project
including engineering, knowledge of city regulations, and recognition of unique issues /
challenges of this particular site and facility
The exhibit design partner is Mike Walker, who had already provided good guidance to
the Museum for the “Land of the Longleaf Pine” installation.
The team did not bring some of the more creative – “out-of-the-box” – recommendations
to the table, but the majority felt that they were most likely to deliver a solid product
within the proscribed budget.
Director’s Update: Ruth Haas
Mrs. Haas reported that the NHC county budget process continues. The budget will be
presented by County Manager Chris Coudriet on May 20, 2013 and the commissioners
will have the final vote on June 17, 2013. The development coordinator position has
moved forward and is included at this time. Cape Fear Museum Associates will still
receive admission revenue and that money will be used to help establish the development
coordinator’s office and other efforts to help that person succeed.
Mrs. Haas reported that based on the NC Senate recommendations the museum will see a
30% cut of the Grassroots Museum’s Science Collaborative funding in the NC budget.
Mrs. Haas gave some highlights from the AASLH Visitor’s Count Survey that was
conducted last fall:
o 3% of visitors came from outside the U.S.; 52.3% were from more than 120 miles
away; 7% came from 60 to 120 miles away; 37.7% came from within 60 miles.
o The respondents most often visited or plan to visit beaches, followed by the aquarium
and the battleship.
o Visitor comments regarding exhibits and customer service were very positive.
Mrs. Haas reported that Museum has received $16,000 for the Big Read Grant. There are
12 to 15 community sponsors/partners and the project is an effective collaboration of all
parties involved. The first Big Read team meeting will be next week. Mrs. Haas
reported that we have applied for a 5,000 grant to provide programming for the Mail Call
exhibit. Mrs. Haas reported that the museum has put in an application to the NEH for 4
films on racial equality to be shown in conjunction with For All the World to See exhibit.
Old/New Business: Jack Mills
Mr. Mills reminded the board that the opening reception for Attack of the Bloodsuckers
will be on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 5:30 pm at the Museum.
A motion was made that the meeting adjourn. With unanimous consent, the meeting ended at
4:40 PM. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at 4:00 PM in the
Williston Auditorium, Cape Fear Museum.
