06-19-20131 Board Members Present: Tucker Stevens Beth Dawson Bill Terrell Nancy Pritchett Ben Woodruff Linda Chapman Jack Mills Gwen Brown Dan Owen Nancy Ballard Cox Absent: Stuart Borrett, Sandra Sheridan and Allen Trask Staff Present: Ruth Haas, Director Barbara Rowe, Curator The Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 in the Williston Auditorium at the Cape Fear Museum. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Jack Mills at 4:00 PM. Approval of Minutes: Jack Mills A motion to accept the May 2013 minutes was made, seconded and approved without opposition. Consideration of Absences: Jack Mills Stuart Borrett, Allen Trask and Sandra Sheridan all indicated their inability to attend this meeting and have been excused. Chairman’s Report: Jack Mills Mr. Mills encouraged board members to fill out their board evaluations if they have not already done so. Stuart Borrett, Sandra Sheridan and Allen Trask have all been reappointed to the board by the NHC Commissioners. Mr. Mills indicated that officers for the next fiscal year will be elected at the July meeting. Those interested in serving should make their interest known. Mr. Mills reported that the next advisory board meeting would be July 17, 2013 at 4 pm. Mrs. Haas will be going out of the museum on medical leave beginning July 23, 2013. A joint meeting with the Cape Fear Museum Associates board will be held on August 21, 2013 at 4:00 pm. Associates Report: Ben Woodruff Mr. Woodruff reported that the Cape Fear Museum Associates will hold its Annual Meeting on June 26, 2013 at 4:00 pm. Officers for 2013-2014 are: o Mike Ryan, President o Lynore Young, Vice President o John Haley, Secretary o Ben Woodruff, Treasurer New board members approved at the Annual Meeting are Mike Ryan, Karel Dutton, Ashley Garner, and Mike Hudson. Owen Nancy Pritchett Tucker Stevens Bill Terrell Beth Dawson, NHC Commissioner Ex-officio: Ben Woodruff CFMA, Inc. 2 Program Committee: Linda Chapman Ms. Chapman introduced the education staff of the museum to briefly discuss summer programs. Then education staff shared one of the hands-on activities used in the Summer Shorts program “Build It” to demonstrate the importance of communication. Strategic Planning Committee: Tucker Stevens No report at this time. Director’s Update: Ruth Haas Mrs. Haas reported that the NHC Commissioners adopted the 2013-2014 budget on Monday, June 17, 2013. The development coordinator position was approved and the job announcement is posted. Mrs. Haas reported that due to the cuts in grassroots grant funding, the education staff has lost almost 35 hours/week of staff support. The part-time reservationist position has been eliminated and Jameson McDermott, Museum Educator, will move from full-time to 24 hours per week. Mrs. Haas reported that the museum has received several grants: o Museum staff members Jan Davidson, Adrienne Garwood, and Barbara Rowe will travel to the Yale Institute in July as part of a research fellowship offered by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Jan Davidson learned of this opportunity and led the team in submitting the application. The fellowship pays all expenses. o The Big Read Grant for $16,000 in conjunction with the Mail Call exhibit and many community collaborators. o SITES/Met Life grant for $5000 for Mail Call exhibit programming o Also from the Gilder Lehrman Institute for American History, we will receive 4 films on civil rights to be shown in 2015 in conjunction with For All the World to See exhibit. Mrs. Haas reported that the preschool backpack program to align with the county strategic initiative on reading readiness will debut at the museum on July 1, 2013. Old/New Business: Jack Mills Night at the Museum will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 from 6-10 pm The “State of the County” programs will be shown on NHC TV from Monday, June 24th to Thursday, June 27th at 7 pm. Board member and NHC Commissioner Beth Dawson filmed her segment here at the museum. Two students who were CFM History Day winners have won at the state level and will go on to compete at the national History Day competition. A motion was made that the meeting adjourn. With unanimous consent, the meeting ended at 5:10 PM. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 4:00 PM in the Williston Auditorium, Cape Fear Museum.
