At the request of the quorum present, Ruth Haas was asked to conduct the meeting. The meeting came to order at 4:00 p.m. Approval of Minutes:  A motion to accept the December 18, 2013, minutes was made, seconded and approved without opposition. Consideration of Absences:  Dan Owen, Linda Chapman, Stuart Borrett, Nancy Ballard Cox, Allen Trask III, and Sandra Sheridan were noted as excused. Chairman’s Report:  The board reviewed the mid-year Achievement Indicators. Strategic changes made by the Education Unit to focus on the popular “Summer Shorts” programs rather than camps and to schedule 4th grade programs in a manner that opened up more days for fee- generating programs resulted in the growth in number of students served and in revenue. Associates Report: Mike Ryan  Cindy Anzalotti passed out tickets for the March 20 “Reach for the Stars” fundraising event and encouraged everyone to fill a table.  Mike Ryan reported that CFMA, Inc. has named John Haley to be the CFMA, Inc., representative to a County panel that reviews candidates for Museum Director. Collections Committee: Nancy Pritchett  Ms. Pritchett reported that the committee recommends approval of loans to the North Carolina History Museum for an exhibit on movies in North Carolina. The 6,000 sq. ft. exhibit is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014. They have agreed to help Cape Fear Museum conserve some of its artifacts and to have a smaller exhibit – using the research and work of NCHM – when the exhibit in Raleigh closes. CFM Collections staff will ensure that any artifact too fragile for exhibit will not be loaned. By a unanimous vote, the loan was approved. MINUTES MUSEUM ADVISORY BOARD MEETING February 19, 2014 2013-14 Board Allen Trask, III Chair Sandra Sheridan Vice Chair Linda Chapman Secretary Stuart Borrett T. Gwendolyn Brown Nancy Ballard Cox Jack Mills Daniel H. Owen Nancy Pritchett Tucker Stevens Bill Terrell Beth Dawson, NHC Commissioner Ex-officio: Mike Ryan CFMA, Inc. 2 Strategic Planning Report: Tucker Stevens  Mr. Stevens led a discussion regarding Cape Fear Museum Associates, Inc. proposal to provide free membership to all New Hanover County residents who come into the Museum and register for a County membership pass. This pass would give the residents free access to the Museum during regular operating hours. o It was noted that fundraising professionals advise museums to have a membership program or have an annual appeal for donations – do not have both, because the messages are conflicting.  The current CFMA, Inc. membership is falling – and is at its lowest level in 10 years  CFMA, Inc. has been conflicted on its messaging.  A $100 membership with benefits will still be available for those individuals and families who want to take advantage of reciprocal visitation opportunities through Cape Fear Museum’s ASTC and SEMC membership. o Moving forward with this proposal it is very important to provide examples from other museums – Colonial Williamsburg and Dallas Art Museum – sharing why these programs were successful:  Membership programs were costing the museums more than the money taken in on memberships.  The free passes resulted in increased visitation and annual average donations increased. o This is a proposal that will need to go to the Commissioners for approval because it does have an impact on budgeted and proposed admission revenues. Parks Bond Plan Report: Bill Terrell  The Parks Bond plan was presented to the Commissioners and the Museum was approved to move forward on the project. There are still issues with the budget that need to be resolved. Director’s Update: Ruth Haas  Everyone was reminded to encourage support for the Reach for the Stars fundraiser. Old/New Business: A motion was made that the meeting adjourn. With unanimous consent, the meeting ended at 5:00 PM. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 4:00 PM in the Williston Auditorium, Cape Fear Museum.
