Museum Strategic Planning Process: Sheryl Mays
Ms. Mays conducted a session to brainstorm questions to provide in the RFP
to help consultants frame and guide the process. The following questions and
comments were offered:
o How can we position ourselves for successful resource development?
o What does the community need?
o How can the Museum help the community excel?
o Are we relevant currently? Are we seen as an aspect of the
community’s quality of life?
o How do we enhance our collaborations with other partners?
o How can we collaborate and still be relevant?
o Does collaboration make us more relevant?
o What is the community’s expectations for the Museum?
o Are we successful? Is it revenue or visitation? How do we define it?
How do we measure it?
o Does our dual mission of science and history require full or partial
integration to be successful? As a follow-up, how are we doing?
o Should our mission encompass science and history? What are the cost
to encompass both? What are the opportunities?
o How should the current facilities be utilized to maximize service to
the community?
o What programs will be the most likely to result in increased visitation
and community satisfaction?
o How can the Museum leverage its collection to increase community
participation?
o If we can find out what the community (at large, our members,
students etc.) expects from us, we can craft a marketing strategy to
increase the numbers of visitors. This in turn will improve the quality
of life in our community.
