04-15-15 Board Members Present: David Ball Will Oden Stuart Borrett Bill Terrell Mike Hudson Rob Zapple Tucker Stevens Gwen Brown Dan Owen Tim Potter Allen Trask Absent: Melissa Ivey, Nancy Pritchett, Mike Ryan Staff Present: Sheryl Mays, Museum Director Dr. Janet Davidson, Historian The Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 in the Williston Auditorium at the Cape Fear Museum. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Allen Trask at 4:00 pm. Approval of Minutes: Allen Trask  A motion to accept the February 18, 2015 minutes was made, seconded and approved without opposition. Consideration of Absences: Allen Trask  Melissa Ivey, Nancy Pritchett, and Mike Ryan indicated their inability to attend this meeting and have been excused. Advisory Chairman’s Report: Allen Trask  Mr. Trask welcomed and introduced Timothy Potter who has been appointed to the Advisory Board by the commissioners to fulfill Nancy Cox’s term.  Mr. Trask reported that the museum’s annual fundraiser, Salute to Our Stars & Stripes, was held on Saturday, March 14th at Union Station. Mr. Trask congratulated Mr. Hudson and the Cape Fear Museum Associates Board for a fantastic evening. CFM Associates Report: Mike Hudson  Mr. Hudson reported on behalf of the Associates board. Mr. Hudson reported that the Stars and Strips fundraiser was a success that resulted in both direct and indirect support from the community. A net of $12,450 was gained after event expenses.  Mr. Hudson reported that the Associates Board is looking to fill two open positions for fiscal year 2015-2016. Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board Meeting Minutes Wednesday, April 15, 2015 Museum Update: Sheryl Mays  Ms. Mays introduced Dr. Janet Davidson, Museum Historian. Dr. Davidson gave a preview/presentation of her new exhibit Reflections in Black and White. The exhibit will open on Friday, May 15, 2015.  Ms. Mays gave a brief update on the Outdoor Learning Environment project. The Ground Breaking Ceremony was held on Tuesday, March 31st and construction has begun. Museum Strategic Planning Process: Sheryl Mays  Ms. Mays conducted a session to brainstorm questions to provide in the RFP to help consultants frame and guide the process. The following questions and comments were offered: o How can we position ourselves for successful resource development? o What does the community need? o How can the Museum help the community excel? o Are we relevant currently? Are we seen as an aspect of the community’s quality of life? o How do we enhance our collaborations with other partners? o How can we collaborate and still be relevant? o Does collaboration make us more relevant? o What is the community’s expectations for the Museum? o Are we successful? Is it revenue or visitation? How do we define it? How do we measure it? o Does our dual mission of science and history require full or partial integration to be successful? As a follow-up, how are we doing? o Should our mission encompass science and history? What are the cost to encompass both? What are the opportunities? o How should the current facilities be utilized to maximize service to the community? o What programs will be the most likely to result in increased visitation and community satisfaction? o How can the Museum leverage its collection to increase community participation? o If we can find out what the community (at large, our members, students etc.) expects from us, we can craft a marketing strategy to increase the numbers of visitors. This in turn will improve the quality of life in our community. Old Business/New Business: Allen Trask  Friday, April 24th from 7 – 10 pm the NC Science Festival Star Party at Carolina Beach State Park.  Saturday, April 25th WWII: A Local Artist’s Perspective exhibit closes  Saturday, May 2nd – Family Science Saturday program Incredible Insects!  Friday, May 15th – Reflections in Black and White exhibit opens A motion was made to adjourn the meeting. With unanimous consent, the meeting ended at 5:30 pm. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 4:00 pm in the Williston Auditorium at the Cape Fear Museum.
