The Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board held its regular monthly meeting on
Wednesday, July 16, 2014 in the Williston Auditorium at the Cape Fear Museum.
The meeting was called to order by Director Ruth Haas at 4:00 pm.
Approval of Minutes: Ruth Haas
A motion to accept the May 2014 minutes as submitted was made, seconded
and approved without opposition.
Consideration of Absences: Ruth Haas
Gwen Brow, Nancy Cox, Beth Dawson and Sandra Sheridan have indicated
their inability to attend this meeting and have been excused.
Introduction of New Board Members: Ruth Haas
Ms. Haas open up the floor and invited the new board members to introduce
themselves to the group.
Associates Report: Mike Ryan
Mr. Ryan reported that the Cape Fear Museum Associates Board had four
new members for fiscal year 2014-2015. These members are:
o Brad Erbes, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy
o Lynn Gattone, Retired
o Jack Mills, Retired
o Alexandria Perillo, Commerical Real Estate
Mr. Ryan reported that the Cape Fear Museum’s Annual Membership
Meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 4th at 4:00 pm in Williston
Auditorium and these members will be elected at that meeting.
Ms. Anzalotti reported that the Zeta Digital Planetarium arrived at the
museum a week ago and the opening party is scheduled for mid-September.

Mr. Ryan reported that the Associates board has agreed to fund a part time
paid internship for the education staff to be able to offer the new planetarium
as an outreach program for the 2014-2015 school year.
Collections Committee Report: Nancy Pritchett
The Collections Committee recommends approval of the proposed list of
acquisitions sent out in the board packet. A motion was made, seconded and
approved without opposition to approve the recommendation to the
commissioners.

commissioners.
The Collections Committee recommends tabling the recommendation on the
disposition of the outdoor water craft. The committee is stilling compiling
information and will forward further information for discussion at the August
board meeting. The recommendation was tabled to the August 2014 meeting.
Chairman’s Report: Allen Trask
Mr. Trask reported that application packets for the new museum director
have been reviewed and telephone interviews were taking place the first week
in August. In person interviews would follow the phone interviews.
Mr. Trask called for the nomination of officers for the 2014-2015 Advisory
Board. After nominations, consent from the nominees and a unanimous vote
the following individuals were elected:

Stuart Borrett, Vice Chair
Allen Trask, Chair
Mr. Trask reviewed the various committees within the board and asked that
members submit via email their committee preferences. Nancy Pritchett and
Dan Owen elected to serve again on the Collections Committee and David
Ball elected to serve on the Parks Bond Committee. An updated committee
roster will be provided at the August 2014 meeting.
Parks Bond Project Up-date: Adrienne Garwood
Ms. Garwood reported that a very successful design charette was held on
June 9th and 10th at the museum. Preliminary design ideas include signage in
both English and Spanish and a gathering space for 30 adults. An update on
the land to be donated was also presented.
Museum Update: Ruth Haas
The 2014-2015 New Hanover County Museum budget has been approved.
One significant increase includes $125,000 for strategic planning for the
museum. And included also in the museum 2014-2015 budget is the
$475,000 for the parks bond project. Grassroots Science Museum’s
Collaborative funding has not been finalized as there is no state budget at this
time. Ms. Haas will provide more information on the Grassroots funding as
she receives it.
Old Business/New Business: Allen Trask
Legislator Day at the Museum is August 12, 2014 beginning at 10 am
A motion was made that the meeting adjourn. With unanimous consent, the meeting
ended at 5:05 pm. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at
4:00 pm in the Williston Auditorium at the Cape Fear Museum.
