HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 10 15 2015 LABMinutes 10 15 2015 LAB Page 1 Library Advisory Board October 15, 2015 Assembly: The Library Advisory Board met in Regular Session on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the New Hanover County Public Library, 201 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, NC. Bonner, Patti (FOL) Present Zimmer, Ronna (LF) EXCUSED Tuchmayer, Harry Present Owens, Paige Present The meeting was called to order by Vice Chair, Elizabeth Stanfield at 2:00 p.m. Public Comment and Agenda Review Public Comment No members of the public were present. Agenda Vice Chair, Elizabeth Stanfield asked if any members of the board would like to remove or add any item(s) from the Agenda. Being no changes, the agenda was accepted as written. Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting The minutes from the last board meeting on September 17, 2015 were sent to the board prior to the meeting for review. The minutes were approved as written. Motion: Harriet Smith MOVED, SECONDED Patti Bonner, to approve the September 17, 2015 minutes as written. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Correspondence None at this time Minutes 10 15 2015 LAB Page 2 Friends of the Library Report Patti Bonner reported the following:  Today, Harriet Smith and I will meet after LAB adjourns to compare our evaluations of 6 applications for 2015 Fall Staff Awards. Our goal is to announce awards at the Annual Meeting on November 6th.  Our 2016 Slate of Officers is posted in the Libraries and on the Friends website. Patti Bonner - President, Hathia Hayes – Vice President, Anna Marie Fleming - Treasurer and Trish Matson - Secretary. We have a new Board member, Trish Abney.  The event with Mary Flinn was great fun on 9/29  You can view just posted photos from that event as well as the Fall Book Sale and United for Libraries/I Geek play day and much more one the Friends web site. New tab and then view galleries box.  Friends are still planning to help with the grand opening of the Paradise Island and the move from the Carolina Beach Branch.  Friends Team lasted three full rounds into the Literacy Council’s Spelling Bee September 17.  We’ll be advertising membership certificates as Holiday gifts soon. You too can give the Gift of Friends! Library Foundation Report  No Report at this time Director’s Report Harry Tuchmayer distributed the Director’s monthly reports to the board prior to the meeting. In addition to the items covered in the reports, he reported on the following:  The Library participated in the City’s Parking Day last month. One of the parking spaces outside of the Main Library’s front door was decorated as a green space. The theme was “Date with a Book”. Children’s and adult books were wrapped up and given out to the public.  All County offices were closed on Oct 3-4 due to predicted flooding in the area. The county did activate the Emergency Center on Sunday.  The Book Sale’s last weekend was affected by the closings. The final Sat & Sun dates were postponed a week. Despite some scheduling issues, the event raised over $55,000 in sales. Paige Owens commented that multiple county departments (Sheriff, Property Management and EOC) pitched in to assist in book sale breakdown and clean up. In addition to the sales at the event, we have received $6,000 in online book sales since this spring.  We are currently hiring new staff for the Northeast Branch. Due to relocation of positions and retirements, we are down to half-staff at this site.  Harry Tuchmayer and Harriet Smith recently attended the State Library Commission meeting. We were able to speak about how NHCPL is looking into the future of libraries.  Invitations to the Thomas Frey event were distributed to all board members.  On November 16th at 9am, Paul Smith will be making a presentation to the NHC Board of Commissioners on behalf of the LAB. We invite everyone to attend and show your support.  NHC has already begun preparation for next year’s budget. Minutes 10 15 2015 LAB Page 3 Committee Reports Nominating Committee John Garner stated that the committee would like to submit the following persons for the upcoming slate of officers to the LAB:  President – Paul Smith  Vice President – Amy Damutz  Secretary – Jan Brewinigton Elizabeth Stanfield asked for other recommendations from the board. Being none, she asked the board for a vote on the recommended slate of officers. All approved and the nominations were accepted. New Business None at this time. Old Business Pleasure Island Branch Update Due to project delays, the branch will not open until the week of Nov. 2nd. Courtyard Name Harry Tuchmayer stated that the new layout of the Carolina Courtyard Park will create an open park and it will no longer be a courtyard park. With the new look and design, he feels that we should take this opportunity to rename the park. He asked the board members to discuss and submit their suggestions to him. Currently, we are promoting the park as the New Hanover County Public Library Story Park. Adjournment There being no further business, Vice Chair, Elizabeth Stanfield adjourned the meeting at 3:20 p.m. We will meet again on Thursday, November 19, 2015.
