Director’s Report
Harry Tuchmayer distributed the Director’s monthly reports to the board prior to the meeting.
In addition to the items covered in the reports, he reported on the following:
The Library participated in the City’s Parking Day last month. One of the parking
spaces outside of the Main Library’s front door was decorated as a green space. The
theme was “Date with a Book”. Children’s and adult books were wrapped up and given
out to the public.
All County offices were closed on Oct 3-4 due to predicted flooding in the area. The
county did activate the Emergency Center on Sunday.
The Book Sale’s last weekend was affected by the closings. The final Sat & Sun dates
were postponed a week. Despite some scheduling issues, the event raised over $55,000
in sales. Paige Owens commented that multiple county departments (Sheriff, Property
Management and EOC) pitched in to assist in book sale breakdown and clean up. In
addition to the sales at the event, we have received $6,000 in online book sales since this
spring.
We are currently hiring new staff for the Northeast Branch. Due to relocation of
positions and retirements, we are down to half-staff at this site.
Harry Tuchmayer and Harriet Smith recently attended the State Library Commission
meeting. We were able to speak about how NHCPL is looking into the future of libraries.
Invitations to the Thomas Frey event were distributed to all board members.
On November 16th at 9am, Paul Smith will be making a presentation to the NHC Board
of Commissioners on behalf of the LAB. We invite everyone to attend and show your
support.
NHC has already begun preparation for next year’s budget.

Pleasure Island Branch Update
Due to project delays, the branch will not open until the week of Nov. 2nd.
Courtyard Name
Harry Tuchmayer stated that the new layout of the Carolina Courtyard Park will create an open
park and it will no longer be a courtyard park. With the new look and design, he feels that we
should take this opportunity to rename the park. He asked the board members to discuss and
submit their suggestions to him. Currently, we are promoting the park as the New Hanover
County Public Library Story Park.
Adjournment
There being no further business, Vice Chair, Elizabeth Stanfield adjourned the meeting at 3:20
p.m.
We will meet again on Thursday, November 19, 2015.
Respectfully submitted,
