REGULAR MEETING MARCH 2, 2016
ASSEMBLY
The Parks Advisory Board held its regular meeting on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at 8:00am
in conference room 119, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington NC.
Present: Bruce Shell (Chairman), Frank Amoroso, Andy Mills, Linda Reece, Shawn Spencer and
Nikki Zeldin.
Absent. Rebecca Powell.
Staff. Tara Duckworth, Andy Johnson and Tanya Gurganious.
WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The meeting was called to order by Bruce Shell who asked for a motion to approve the minutes
of the February Yd board meeting.
MOTION: Frank Amoroso, MOVED; SECONDED by Nikki Zeldin, that the minutes of the
February 3rd meeting be approved. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
1. Directors Report. Tara reported that she recently attended the Visitors Bureau's Sport
Marketing Committee meeting. She shared the following highlights from that meeting:
Phase 2 of Empie Park improvements will take place this calendar year. Included in the
improvements will be the addition of five tennis courts, resurfacing of existing tennis courts
and restroorn renovations.
- Cape Fear Community College games will be held at Legion Stadium beginning in August.
Participation in the Beach to Battleship race is expected to increase from 2,000 to 3,000
participants.
Internally, funding for the skate park is going well and we expect to hear any day now if we will
be awarded the $25,000 Tony Hawk Grant. Highway 55 Restaurant on Gordon Road will donate
10% of its profits to the skate park tomorrow, Thursday March, Yd from 4 -7pm. The skate park
site has been cleared and we are ready to go. A master plan public meeting will be held on March
16d', 6pm at the Executive Development Center. Greenplay, the company conducting the master
plan, will be one hand to share the survey results.
The contract has been signed with Trillium and they have approved the splash pad design.
Cunningham Recreation will send the final design this week. Demolition will begin at Hugh
MacRae this month. The new basketball court will be constructed in front of the baseball field.
The court will have adjustable basketball goals which can be used for the smaller kids. In
addition, four basketball courts will be renovated at Roland Grise Middle School during spring
break.
The New Hanover County school system will build a new elementary school in Porters Neck.
Blair and College Park Elementary schools will both be torn down and rebuilt. This may cause
some issues with regards to schedule of athletic fields since the Blair baseball fields are
scheduled to be removed permanently.
2. Park Operations Update. Andy Johnson shared that on April 5'h there will be over 300
volunteers from the realtors association who participate in various beautification projects
throughout the parks system. The Food Truck Rodeo will be held at Ogden Park on Sunday,
April 17'h. Board members are encouraged to attend.

3. Other Business. Bruce shared that he will talk to the City regarding the use of Olsen Park.
Shawn Spencer shared that the Wrightsville Beach Fate Tire bike race on the sand will take place
on Saturday, March 12 'h. The race begins at the Blockade Runner Hotel.

MOTION: Andy Mills MOVED; SECONDED by Nikki Zeldin, that the meeting be adjourned.
Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
The meeting adjourned at 9:45 am.
