The Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board held its regular monthly meeting on
Ex-officio:
Wednesday, November 20, 2016 in Williston Auditorium at the Cape Fear Museum.

The meeting was called to order by Vice Chairman Stuart Borrett at 4:00 pm.

Approval of Minutes: Stuart Borrett
A motion to accept the November 18, 2015 minutes was made, seconded and
approved without opposition.
Consideration of Absences: Stuart Borrett
Mike Hudson, Will Oden, Dan Owen, Allen Trask indicated their inability to
attend this meeting and have been excused.
Advisory Chairman’s Report: Stuart Borrett
Dr. Borrett reported that four out of the twelve board members had
memberships to the museum. He encouraged everyone to renew or purchase
a CFM membership.
Questions were raised about the different membership levels.
Dual - NARM (includes reciprocal with the Cameron Art Museum)

Family - ASTC & NARM (includes reciprocal with the Cameron Art
o
Museum)
Community - membership is given to a local family, no reciprocal
o
Dr. Borrett reviewed the upcoming event dates at the museum.
CFM Associates Report: Sheryl Mays for Mike Hudson
Ms. Mays reported that 63 community memberships have been purchased on
since the initiative was launched.
CFM is partnering with the YWCA and the Grandparent Support Network to
give the first community memberships to 45 grandparents and their families.
The Museum will continue to reach out to other agencies to provide the
community memberships to in need families.
Collections Committee Report: Nancy Pritchett
The Collections Committee is placing the “we need” list on hold after finding
out the library is currently collecting material too.
Ms. Rowe then updated the board on the basement and the upcoming work to
seal it. The process is going to be done and paid for by NHC property
management.
Mr. Stevens asked if we had all of the Azalea festival posters, and Barbara
will look and see if we do.
Mr. Zapple said the county has all of them if the museum needs them,

Ms. Rowe can contact him.
Ms. Pritchett did suggest changing the Michael Jordan exhibit to showcase
sports stars of the area.
Community Engagement Committee Report: Tucker Stevens
Mr. Stevens has now set goals and is working on them before the February
meeting.
Strategic Planning Committee Report: Bill Terrell/Sheryl Mays
Ms. Mays presented Museum Visitors & Public Perception, a summary
developed by Reach Advisors.
The survey that is live, and the organizations who are participating, include:

Wrightsville Beach Museum of History

Aquarium at Fort Fisher

Cameron Art Museum

NHC Libraries
o
NHC has also posted on the county website and promoting it heavily.

Museum Update: Sheryl Mays
Ms. Mays provided an update on the budget.
CFM FY17 budget was $4300 more than requested last year.
o
The Grassroots Science grant will now be a competitive grant. It is
o
not likely that the Museum will qualify for funds in the future based
on criteria set by the NC Legislature.
There are two educator positions funded by Grassroots that are being
o
covered by a museum escrow account for FY17, but we will need to
ask for funding from the county for FY18.
The Museum received an $8000 Disney/ASTC grant to support Mystery at
the Museum, and a $19,000 grant through GE Hitachi to renovate the store
space for education.
Visitation during the holiday week programs increased 56% over the same
period last year.
Ms. Mays shared that the museum has 178 current memberships.
Old Business/New Business: Stuart Borrett
Mr. Zapple asked if there were in policies in place for dealing with a hostile
individual.
Ms. Mays has been asked to participate in a new NHC committee to
o
develop policies regarding active shooters and hostile individuals.
Ms. Mays detailed the policy for school lockdowns.
Ms. Mays has asked for cameras to help with security at the museum.
Upcoming Dates:
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting. With unanimous consent, the meeting
ended at 5:10pm. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2016
at 4:00 pm in the Williston Auditorium at the Cape Fear Museum.
