REGULAR MEETING SEPTEMBER 6, 2017
ASSEMBLY
The Parks Advisory Board held its regular meeting on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at
8:00am in Conference Room 119, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington NC.
Present:
Colin Hackman, , Linda Reece and Rebecca Powell.
Absent:
Bruce Shell, Shawn Spencer and Nikki Zeldin.
Staff:
Tara Duckworth, Tanya Gurganious and Andy Johnson.
WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The meeting was called to order by Tara Duckworth. There were no changes to the minutes of the
August meeting and the following motion was presented:

Directors Report.
Tara shared with the board the great news that theDOT will provide additional

funds for the Middle Sound Loop Project. Will go before the commissioners for final approval.
Andy is working on getting the old house taken down at the Pages Creek Park Preserve. The parks
conservancy board is putting together a fundraiser for the proposed challenge course which will be
located at Northern Regional Park. Plans are underway to hold a fundraiser in February or March
at Hugh MacRae Park. A trash mob will take place this coming Saturday near Smith Creek Park.
Everyone will meet at Parkwood Park. Next month the will bring school policy for review. Northern
parks tour next month from 8-11:30am. She also shared the following information about Airlie
Gardens: The art exhibit will end at the end of September. The last concert will take place on

Friday, September 15. The board was also reminded that the first Sunday of every month is free
admission for New Hanover County residents. A contractor has been secured to redo the Bottle
Chapel as some of the bottles are broken and/or need replacing.
Park Operations Update.
Andy Johnson reported that Northern Regional Park will be getting the

playground that was removed from Hugh MacRae Park. Installation will take place at the end of
October. Elements will also be added to the Ogden Park playground. Andy met with a pickle ball
contractor who said he would be able to make six pickle ball courts out of the two tennis courts at
Northern Regional Park.
Other Business.
The County has signed a lease withUNCW for the use of the track. The public

can now use both the track and tennis courts.
