REGULAR MEETING MARCH 4, 2018
ASSEMBLY
The Parks Advisory Board held its regular meeting on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 8:00am in
Conference Room 119, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington NC.
Present:
Linda Reece (presiding), Colin Hackman, Bruce Shell, Shawn Spencer and
Nikki Zeldin.
Absent:
Rebecca Powell.
Staff:
Tara Duckworth, Tanya Gurganious and Andy Johnson.
Guest.
Steve Morrissey, Cape Fear Pickle Ball Club.
WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The meeting was called to order by Linda Reece who welcomed everyone and asked if there were
any corrections to the minutes of the February meeting. The following change for 4. Other Business was
noted by Sean Spencer: lso shared information regarding electric assist bicycles. He
shared the 3 types of pedal assist, Class 1 (assist with no throttle max speed 20 mph), Class 2 (assist with
throttle and max speed 20mph) and Type 3 (assist with max speed of 28mph). He wanted to bring awareness
of the fact that they will be growing in popularity in our area and the board should make themselves aware

Tara Duckworth shared that staff is continuing to push forward with several
ongoing projects: Middle Sound Loop trail, skate park seepage fix and grant applications. She and Andy
are going before the County Commissioners regarding the proposed Gold Star Memorial. She has

Saturday, March 10 on Harris Road near Smith Creek Park.
2. Operations Report.
Andy Johnson reported that staff is still working on the Pages Creek kayak
launch. A grant has been applied for through the Parks Conservancy which we hope to hear news on
in April. Field reservations started back up in mid-February. The athletic field priority list has helped.
3.New Business.
Tara shared with the board a copy of the letter Bruce Shell asked her to draft regarding
at this point.
The board read over the letter and had no changes or additions. The following motion was presented:

There was a brief discussion regarding the bike park and adequate parking at that site.
