Reducing barriers to employment for persons with a criminal history is a statewide concern, and the State finds the ability to obtain meaningful employment is essential to reinstating good citizenship for individuals with a criminal history. Effective July 1, 2016, New Hanover County amended its practices regarding inquiry to an applicant's criminal history, which are in alignment with those outlined in HB409. In addition, at least 10 burials have taken place since the property was acquired. In 1999, 162 graves from Pine Tree Cemetery, which was previously owned by New Hanover County, were relocated to the cemetery.
