2019-03-22 Minutes Minutes New Hanover County/City of Wilmington Community Relations Advisory Committee Public Education Sub-Committee 230 Government Center Drive, Suite 646 March 22, 2019 – 1:00 PM Public Education Sub-Committee Members Present: Florence Warren and Anne York Absent: None Staff Present: Tufanna L. Bradley-Thomas Citizens: None I. Call to Order Ms. York called the meeting to order at 12:55 p.m. A quorum was established. II. Approve Agenda MOTION: Ms. York MOVED, SECONDED by Ms. Warren, to approve the agenda as presented. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNAMIMOUSLY. III. Appointment of a Chair There was a brief discussion regarding the committee bylaws that state that the Chairman appoints all standing committee chairmen. The committee agreed to recommend to CRAC Chairwoman that Ms. York would be the chair of the Public Education sub-committee. IV. Determine Regular Meeting Dates & Times There was a brief discussion regarding appropriate dates and times for the committee to meet. The committee determined that it would meet on the second Wednesday at 2:00 pm in a location TBD. V. Review Sub-Committee Purpose There was a brief facilitated discussion regarding the sub-committee’s purpose to lead into a discussion regarding goals, strategies and action items. VI. Determine Goals and Strategies The following goals and strategies were discussed:  Develop a communication strategy that included social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) PURPOSE: The committee was established by the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners and Wilmington City Council for the purpose of addressing community issues involving prejudice or discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, creed or religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition; informing the Appointing Authorities and other organizations of their findings; and making recommendations, in an advisory capacity, to the Appointing Authorities and other organizations, as necessary. Minutes New Hanover County/City of Wilmington Community Relations Advisory Committee Public Education Sub-Committee 230 Government Center Drive, Suite 646 March 22, 2019 – 1:00 PM  Identify one location to have a member share committee information on a weekly basis and identify a sub/back up when the committee member cannot be there  Plan and Implement at least 4 “Meet & Greets” Strategic locations o Walkable  Parking  Southside, Northside, and other areas such as Kerr Ave., Carolina Beach  Road MLK Center, Maides Park, Pine Valley Library, DC Virgo, St. Stephen,  Jamaica House Suggested Dates: May/June (Maides Park), August/September (Pine Valley o Library), December/January (DC Virgo or St. Stephen), and April (Hispanic Community to be identified at a later date) Suggested Times: 6:00 pm or 7:00 pm during the week; 10:00 am on a Saturday o Provide Refreshments o As many CRAC members attend as possible o  Update the brochure to be community focused/friendly  Create a complaint process, including a brochure Process Instructions o Complaint Form o  Share resource information with the community VII.
