2019-08-14 Minutes AGENDA New Hanover County/City of Wilmington Community Relations Advisory Committee Crisis Prevention & Preparedness Sub-Committee 230 Government Center Drive, Room 646 August 14, 2019 – 3:30 PM Crisis Prevention & Preparedness Sub-Committee Members Present: Charles Davis, Chief Deputy Ken Sarvis (Ex Officio) and Owen Wexler Absent: Kathy King and Maurice Locklear Staff Present: Tufanna L. Bradley-Thomas Citizens: None I. Call to Order Owen Wexler called the meeting to order at 3:31 p.m. A quorum was not established. II. Approve Agenda III. Old Business Coordination with Law Enforcement There was a discussion with Chief Deputy Sarvis regarding how law enforcement can collaborate with C-RAC during community crises related to prejudice and discrimination. Mr. Owen explained that the C-RAC can assist in bridging gaps with law enforcement with community members. Chief Deputy Sarvis explained that in the evident that there is a crisis there could be a community briefing that C-RAC members could attend. He also explained that a lot of times, they cannot share specific information during an investigation but they strive to build relationships in the community in multiple ways from their SROs, communication with students and families and at community events. Chief Deputy Sarvis also urged sub-committee members to let them know if there are things that can be done better as well as if there is possibly a crisis on the horizon. NAACP Legal Redress Committee Collaboration Rev. Davis discussed the need to collaborate. He informed the sub-committee that he was scheduling a meeting between C-RAC leadership, NAACP leadership and Ms. Thomas in the near future. PURPOSE: The committee was established by the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners and Wilmington City Council for the purpose of addressing community issues involving prejudice or discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, creed or religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition; informing the Appointing Authorities and other organizations of their findings; and making recommendations, in an advisory capacity, to the Appointing Authorities and other organizations, as necessary.
