HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 05 16 2019 LABMinutes 05 16 2019 LAB Page 1 Library Advisory Board May 16, 2019 Assembly: The Library Advisory Board met in Regular Session on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Main Library in Wilmington, NC. Board Members Brewington, Jan EXCUSED Chadurjian, Denise EXCUSED Conlon, Dennis PRSENT Damutz, Amy EXCUSED Dodd, Scott PRESENT Montwieler, Katherine PRESENT Shore, Sam EXCUSED Smith, Harriet PRESENT Smith, Ida PRESENT Smith, Paul EXCUSED Walker, Bradford EXCUSED Zimmer, Ronna PRESENT Staff Members & Board Reps. Tom Brimberry (FOL Rep), Harry Tuchmayer (Director), Paige Owens (Asst. Director) Harriet Smith convened the meeting at 2:00 p.m. Public Comment None Agenda Review Agenda was approved by consent. Approval of previous minutes The minutes from the last board meeting on April 18, 2019 were sent to the board prior to the meeting for review. Motion: Dennis Conlon MOVED, SECONDED by Katherine Montwieler, to accept the minutes of the April 18, 2019 meeting as written. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Correspondence Harry Tuchmayer reported that the library has received 2 thank you letters. One from AARP Tax Volunteers for the use of the Masonboro Room. They were able to serve over 900 people. The second from Travis Matthews with NHC Schools. All middle school students used meeting spaces for a week while working on their 1898 project. Friends of the Library Report Tom Brimberry presented the following report:  The Pine Valley Soft Opening hosted by The Friends went very well.  Planning a walking tour of libraries over time (Colonial times to present). Foundation Board Report Ronna Zimmer present the following report:  Hosted an evening reception at Pine Valley for donors.  Beverly Tetterton will be the speaker at the fundraising luncheon. Date TBD. Minutes 05 16 2019 LAB Page 2  The NH Genealogical Society has disbanded and make a donation of their remaining funds to the Library Foundation in the amount of $19,090.61. These funds are to be used to pay for an Intern in the NHCPL Local History Room. They have also given their copyrights of 45 genealogical titles to NHCPL. Director’s Report Harry Tuchmayer submitted his report to board at the meeting. In addition to the report he added the following: Pine Valley Opening was successful.  Among all the positive comments, we have heard a few negative. Negative comments about the noise level in the computer areas and books too low on bottom shelving.  Pine Valley has seen a significant increase in circulations, door counts and new users.  Harry will check schedules to see about holding a future meeting at the Pine Valley location. New Business “Behind the Scenes” of Tech Services Margaret Miles stated that the Technical Services department is responsible for the ongoing maintenance, acquisitions, processing and cataloging of all library materials. We are working with more suppliers who offer package ready materials to cut down on processing time. This allow us to get materials in our patron’s hands faster. Inter Library Loans (ILL) requests allow patrons to borrow books from other libraries. Tech services processes these requests. Margaret also distributed and review the library’s stats on new borrowers and circulations. Retirement Harry Tuchmayer announced that after 38 years with NHCPL he will be retiring on June 28th.
