HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-08-27 Minutes Page 1 Meeting Minutes New Hanover County/City of Wilmington Community Relations Advisory Committee NHC Library 101 Chestnut Street, New Hanover Room August 27, 2019 5:30 PM Committee Members Present: Chair Evelyn Bryant, Vice-Chair Owen Wexler, Reverend Charles Davis, Jeff Hovis, Jen Johnson, Dr. Maurice Locklear,Elise Rocks, Dr. Anne York Absent: Kathy King, Lori Wainright, Florence Warren StaffPresent: Tufanna Bradley-Thomas, New Hanover County; Suzanne Rogers, City of Wilmington I.Call to Order Chair Bryant called the meeting to order at 5:34 pm. Quorum established. II. Approve Agenda MOTION: Mr. Wexler MOVED, SECONDED by Dr. York, to approve the agenda. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. III. Approve Minutes MOTION: Mr. Hovis MOVED, SECONDED by Mr. Wexler, to approve the minutes of July 23, 2019. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Elise Rocks arrived at 5:48 pm. IV. Guest Speaker: TR Nunley Presentation of LGBTQIA Community (10-minute presentation; 5 minutes for questions) Mr. Nunley introduced himself as a member of the trans community born as a female but found that within he was not happy. d Mr. Nunley stated that he has found that it has been difficult to prove discrimination even though he has had co-workers who refuse to call him by his preferred name. lthcare plan does not cover it. Mr. Nunley explained that his friends helped him out and raised money ($7,260) for the surgery. Mr. Nunley stated that members of the LGBTQIA community are asking for more inclusivity and not asking for special treatment and need the following: Comprehensive Healthcare Healthcare that covers procedures that are trans related County participation , not just to do only what they are legally obligated to do here were some questions from the C-RAC to Mr. Nunley: Are all NHC policies LGBTQIA/trans friendly? Is the NHC healthcare policy public to employees? Did the county opt out for covering hormone therapy for trans persons? Based on the information that Mr. Nunley provided, Ms. Johnson informed the committee that the only a 15. She also explained that there was a feeling that people from the LGBTQIA community were not welcomed to be appointed to the C-RAC and not openly welcomed. Page 2 Ms. Johnson recommended that the C-RAC Programming sub-committee conduct research through communications with the ACLU on recommended actions to the city and county in regards to laws and/or policies that protect the LGBTQIA community. V. Sub-Committee Reports: Mr. Wexler reported for the Crisis Prevention/Preparedness Sub-Committee as follows: Mr. Wexler informed the committee that the sub-committee did not have a quorum but he and Rev. Davis had discussions during the meeting. Also, Chief Deputy Ken Sarvis was in attendance to discuss how law enforcement and C-RAC can work together more closely to show coordination to the community. Chief Deputy Sarvis explained that there are opportunities for the community to be called in during a community crisis and C-RAC can be included. Rev. Davis discussed scheduling a meeting of C-RAC and the NAACP Legal Redress Committee to coordinate closer collaboration with community members served with complaints of discrimination. Mr. Wexler agreed to notify sub-committee members of meetings to encourage attendance and participation. Ms. Johnson reported for the Programming Sub-Committee as follows: The programming sub-committee did not meet in August. However, Ms. Johnson attended the Cape Fear Disability Committee meeting on August 21, 2019. There were a few suggestions for C-RAC: Add C-RAC brochure to the website Provide a two week notice for a deaf interpreter for C-RAC meetings List accommodations on C-RAC webpage: agendas printed in large print, interpretation The state will assist people with needs Dr. York reported for the Public Education Sub-Committee as follows: Dr. York confirmed with the committee that the Meet and Greet is scheduled for September 10, 2019, at 5:00 pm at DC Virgo Preparatory Academy before their PTA meeting. The Meet & Greet will be one Candidate Forum at 6:30 pm at the MLK Center. She also informed the committee that food (pizza) will be provided and flyers have been created. The sub-committee has started to plan the next Meet and Greet in January/February and it will be held at the Pine Valley branch of the New Hanover County Public Library. Dr. York informed the committee that she is planning a bus ride on the WAVE. She also informed the committee that she was resigning from the committee but has enjoyed her service here; her replacement should come in October. VI. New Business: Review questions for September guest presentation: No questions were provided, but Chairwoman Bryant encouraged the committee to send questions to Ms. Bradley-Thomas as soon as possible. VII.Public Comments: None. VIII: Announcements: Officer Jacobs was in attendance in the place of Mr. Williams; there are new Wilmington Police Department rescue vehicles and they have been made available to the C-RAC for a ride along in possibly October. This weekend is Gay Pride Weekend; Friday is the Bar Crawl; Saturday from Noon to 10:00 pm there is a block party with venders on Castle Street, and Saturday at 7:00 pm there is a Drag Show thth The East Wilmington Community Day is October 12 (12:00 pm-11:30 pm) and October 13 (there will be food, vendors and a gospel concert). There will be a Hospital Community Forum on August 28, 2019, at 6:00 pm at the ILA Hall. The Resiliency Task Force Training is scheduled for September 10, 2019 IX.
