I'
ÖJ
I
Ms. B.J. McCorkle, Women's Health Care Director, asked that the
Board of Health consider the establishment of two MOW positions.
She explained that MOWs would serve as "lay health advisors" to
enhance the care being provided by Maternity Care Coordinators
and Child Service Coordinators in the Women's Health Care Program
with the goal to combat North Carolina's high rate of infant
mortality. A grant for approximately $52,000 will pay for the
MOW project for one year beginning January 1995. In January
1996, Medicaid will reimburse the Health Department's costs. It
is a year long joint effort of the Maternal and Child Health
Division, N.C. Department of Environment, Health and Natural
Resources; the Division of Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and the
Office of Rural Health and Resource Development.
Ms. Mary Piner, Public Health Nurse, gave examples of maternity
patients who could use these services. She explained that MOWs
could spend time providing extra support to high risk expectant
mothers allowing other professional staff members more time with
intermediate risk and new patients.
Motion: After discussion, Dr. Paul moved for the Board to
pursue obtaining the $52,000 grant funding for the establishment
of two MOW positions in the Women's Health Care Program of the
New Hanover County Health Department. Upon vote, the MOTION DID
