NEW HANOVER COUNTY HEALTH DEPAR~
POSITION STATEMENT ON SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
The New Hanover County Board of Health is committed to educating
the public that having sexual encounters without concern for the
consequences could be
harmful
to
your
health.
Besides
contracting or transmitting communicable diseases such as AIDS,
gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, genital warts, hepatitis B, pelvic
inflammatory disease, chlamydia, and papilloma virus, there are
other risks such as unintended pregnancy and increased risk of
cervical cancer. Because the signs and symptoms of many sexually
transmitted diseases are not readily apparent, it is important to
abstain from sex or to know you and your partner are uninfected
and to remain mutually faithful.
Individuals who do not know
whether or not they or their partners are infected should use
condoms. However, condom use does not always prevent the spread
of sexually transmitted diseases because of failure rate.
