HElD IN OFFICE OF OOliliD
OCTOBER 26, 1944
Present: Mr. Addison Hewlett, Chainnan, !.Iayor W. Ronald Lane, Dr.
J. C. Wessell and Mr. H. M. Roland.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.
The Health Officer presented the monthly reports.
Mr. H. E. Longley and his Manager, Mr. McKenzie, appeared before the
Board to ask approval of the Orangeburg Fibre Pipe (wood fibre treated
with pitch) for use in sewer connections from a point five feet beyond
the house to the City mains. Mr. Longley presented a sample of the
material and the names of numerous cities and state health departments
that had approved this materal as a substitute for cast iron or terra
cotta in plumbing work. It waS moved by Dr. Wessell, seconded by Mayor
Lane, that the Board take this re~uest under consideration and write
selected places in order to get all possible data on this material. They
especially asked on length of time such departments had been using this
material and if they were still using it.
Mr. Roland reported that the Board of Education had not had a meeting
since the communication from the Health Department regarding X-raying
of school teachers in this County; therefore, he had no official report
but stated that all of the COloments from private individuals had been
favorable.
The Health Officer asked the Board's approval on the Typhus Control Unit
proceeding with the proofing of the K. C. Sidbury property on South
Second Street and the I. Shain property on North Fourth Street. In this
connection the danger of using up the revolving fund if too many places
were proofed without the owner's consent waS discussed, and it was sug-
gested that the City Attomey be asked if there is not some way to make
these people do the work themselves rather than have the Typhus Unit pay
for all materials and labor and then possibly be delayed a long time in
the collection for this material abd labor.
There being no further business the meeting adjoumed.
