HEGULAR MONTHLY MEETIl'G BOARD OF HEALTH
HELD IN OFF ICE OF BOARD
AUGUST 4, 1954
Present: Ralph T. Horton, Chairman; Mayor E. L. White, Dr. J. C. Knox, Dr.
J. C. Wessell, Dr. James H. Smith and Mr. H. M. Roland.
On motion by Mayor White, seconded by Dr. Wessell, the reading of the minutes
of the last meeting was dispensed with.
Mr. Lassiter reported that the Jordan plumbing matter had been a djusted in a
satisfactory manner.
The 1954-1955 budget for the health department was presented for approval. Dr.
Wessell reminded the Board that the new nurse was for only a part of the year _
April through June 1955. Chairman Horton stated that $300.00 for the attorney
and $600.00 for the janitress had been cut from the budget. The Health Officer
stated that the part time janitor service down stairs had not been at all satis-
factory. Chairman Horton stated that he had dis~lssed this work with Miss Bolyn
and Mr. Garrison and they are to work this matter out. Mayor White made the motion,
seconded by Dr. Knox, that we accept the budget as presented August 4, 1954, a copy
of which is attached. Carried.

Mr. Lassiter explained to the Board that asbestos cement pipe is being used in some
places instead of cast iron for house sewers. He asked permission for the Board to
allow some experimental installations in this County. After a general discussion of
the comparative value of cast iron as compared with absestos cement pipe; motion was
made by Mayor White that the use of asbestos cement pipe be permitted for soil line
for house sewers. This motion received no second. Dr. Wessell then made a motion that
it be allowed on an experimental basis including several private homes and in the build-
ing to be constructed sometime in the near future by the highway department. This motion
was seconded by Dr. Smith and carried. Mayor White voting no on motion by Dr. Wessell.
Chairman Horton stated that he had received several calls regarding bad odors at a
combination feed, chicken and plant store. He said he had been advised that the party
had been told by the health department to clean up, but that the condition still
existed. The Health Officer stated that the owner of this establishment had been given
written notice and ten days in which to correct the situation.
