DISCUSSION OF HARDSHIP CASES - NEW HANOVER COUNTY SCHOOLS
Ms. Julie Hel ton, representing a group of concerned
mothers, commented on the recent decision by the Board of
Education denying hardship cases. She stated all mothers
present were hardship cases and very upset about being given
two weeks notice before the beginning of the school that
hardship cases would not be granted which would require
different day care and transportation arrangements. Concern
was expressed for day care, which in some cases is being
provided by a grandparent free of charge, and other problems
that represent additional costs when transferring children
to another school.
commissioner Retchin strongly urged the parents to
approach the Board of Education expressing their concerns
stating they are elected officials and should be responsive
to the public for decisions of this nature.
After further discussion, it was the general consensus
that each member of the Board of commissioners would contact
members of the Board of Education expressing the concern for
the short notice given in denying hardship cases.
