WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES. Mark Tyler called the meeting to order and asked if there

by Bonnie Nelson: Under the motion to approve the minutes, it should read: f the
th
March 18 . Also, under the Development Report, the date for the
. There were no further additions or corrections, and
the following motion was presented:
MOTION: Rob Zapple MOVED; SECONDED by Eric Blaesing, that the minutes of the April meeting be
approved with the corrections as stated. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
1. Mark welcomed those in attendance and shared that there is a lot going on in
the gardens. He was especially happy to share that the gate receipts for April set a record with 60%
of the visitors coming from outside of New Hanover County. He thanked the Airlie team for being
creative in getting the organization through the past year.
2. Hank shared that the month of April set records at Airlie Gardens for gate
admissions. (April's gate revenue of $92,220 is higher than any month in the last six fiscal years by
over $40K.) Membership and gift shop revenue were close to the highest levels Airlie has seen in
several years with revenue for the month at $44K and $14K, respectively. Wedding season is in full
swing and portrait sessions continue to be very busy. New Enchanted Airlie decorations have been
purchased per board approval last month. A new expense line on the financial statements was
created for Grounds Maintenance. This has captured the expenses related to specific fertilizer and
expenses related to the Airlie Oak. (These expenses have been covered between donations raised
specifically for the Airlie Oak and a $5,000 unrestricted donation in June from Stanley Smith
Horticultural Trust.) The endowment continues to grow with a fiscal year-to-date unrealized gain of
nearly $1.6 million.
3. Director/Operations Report. Tara shared that staff has been working on concert logistics. (Concerts
will start in July.) We have modified where people will be picked up from due to construction at the
Gove
and we want to make sure we are creating/keeping the ambiance. Contemplating a members-only
event. Looking at our memberships to figure out a good balance for the different levels.
Environmental Educators have realized more can be done online, with adults as well as children. Tara

4. Development Report. Janine Powell shared that the bands have been booked and the buses
reserved for the concerts. The live oak sale was very successful. All 250 live oaks were sold in about
36 hours. We believe this will be a great revenue stream for the Airlie Oak Project. Planning to have
another sale of more mature live oak trees in the fall.
5. Other Business. The Azalea Festival Committee is in full swing planning for the Garden Party which
th
will take place on Friday, July 30.
6. Next Meeting. The next board meeting will take place in person at the Airlie Cottage on Thursday,
th
June 17 at 8:15am.
