Summary of C-RAC Programming committee meeting (7/8/2021)
C-RAC members: Jen Johnson, Liz Carbone, Scott Whisnant and Lori Wainright
Collective ambition for the upcoming full committee meeting
We would like at least two members of the committee to be assigned to the following groups, to
research and conduct outreach to the constituency and find out what concerns are there so that the C-
RAC can try to address them. The outreach would involve identifying and talking to community
organizations/nonprofit leaders and members of the public and reporting back to the full committee at
September meeting. The C-RAC directory will be a good resource for this project.
We believe the following need the most attention:
1. Disability Community
2. County of origin (Hispanic, Vietnamese)
3. Race
4. LGBTQ – Jen Johnson, lead
**We need to pester Dr Bonds to give us her presentation from the last CRAC meeting. Several
members have requested it.**
Jen shared her concern about the holding pattern with the City ordinance that would prohibit
discrimination against the LGBTQ community. More than 10 other NC communities have adopted these
types of laws. City legal team says that everyone has a different legal interpretation; lack of action has to
do with concerns over lawsuits that will be filed against the cities and counties that have passed these
laws.
Scott is inviting Dr Foust to the August meeting which will be held at Monteith downtown. They have a
new exhibit of portraits of Black individuals who have been leaders in civil rights in Wilmington.
Lori is serving on the Affordable Housing Committee which is developing a PR plan to raise awareness
for the need for bond/tax to fund housing for people making less than $40,000 a year.
