This nearly level, very poorly drained soil is on broad smooth flats and in slight depressions on the uplands.
Areas are small to large in size and irregular in shape. Most of the acreage is forested. The rest is used for
residential and industrial sites. The native vegetation consists of loblolly pine, pond pine, bay trees, red
maple, water oak, gum, waxmyrtle, and gallberry.
Typically, the surface layer is 20 inches thick. It is black loamy fine sand in the upper part and very dark
gray loamy fine sand in the lower part. The subsoil is mottled light gray fine sandy loam 26 inches thick.
The underlying layer, to a depth of 64 inches, is mottled light gray fine sand.
Included with this soil in mapping are small areas of Stallings, Murville, and Pantego soils.
The organic-matter content of the surface layer is medium. Permeability is moderately rapid, available
water capacity is medium, and shrink-swell potential is low. Reaction is extremely acid to strongly acid
throughout where this soil has not been limed. The seasonal high water table is at or near the surface.
This soil is frequently flooded for long periods.
A seasonal high water table and flooding are the main limitations in the use and management of this soil.
Most lawn grasses, shrubs, and trees are generally easily established and maintained. Some shrubs and
trees may be unsuited to this soil because of wetness. Capability subclasses Vw, where undrained, and
IIIw, where drained; woodland group 2w.
