It is will great pleasure I write this letter of support in favor of New Hanover County Workforce
Housing Services Program. My name is Mark E. Connor; I am the current president of NC
REALTORS® Housing Foundation.
NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation is the philanthropic arm of NC REALTORS®.
Founded in 2004 by North Carolina REALTORS®, NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation is a
501(c)(3) charity that provides resources to create, expand and encourage home ownership
opportunities for deserving North Carolinians. The foundation promotes awareness of affordable
housing issues by educating North Carolinians and their representatives about the barriers to
home ownership and the resources needed to increase housing affordability. Our Vision: North
Carolina REALTORS® are the leading voice for strong communities and housing affordability
for all. Our Mission: NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation, a charitable foundation, provides
housing opportunities through education and community-based initiatives including disaster
relief.
North Carolina and more specifically New Hanover County faces a shortage of affordable
housing. The affordable housing issue is more complicated than merely finding a place to call
home, there are health ramifications also. Recent studies highlight the link between a lack of
safe, affordable housing and the impact that substandard housing has on residents’ health,
particularly asthma cases in young children. So many North Carolinians live in substandard
housing that impacts their wellbeing. The New Hanover County Workforce Housing Services
Program plans to construct 48 townhome units to be sold to individuals who earn 80 - 120% of
the area median income. This development will aid in assisting the drastic affordable housing
gap and serve as a model for other cities and counties throughout the state of North Carolina.
I am confident you will agree this is a phenomenal project and being granted financial support
would go a long way.
