RECOGNIZINGRESOLUTION
THE GREATER WILMINGTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EDUCATION FOUNDATIO
THROUGH THE LEADERSHIP WILMINGTON PROGRAM I
WHEREAS, the program consists of ten sessions to promote leadership skills, community
issues and challenges, regional social and economic change, diversity, equity, and
inclusion; and
WHEREAS, the Leadership Wilmington members work together and individually to plar
and execute a day of service for schools and nonprofits, known as Work on Wilmington;
and
WHEREAS,
readership Wilmington is committed to providing a continuous, diverse supply
f creative leaders to the community by developing their knowledge of the region and
providing them the opportunity for meaningful action.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the New Hanover County Board of
Commissioners recognizes the Leadership Wilmington Class of 2023 and the Greater
Wilmington Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation for their commitment and
dedication for contributing to the quality of life in New Hanover County and surrounding

NATIONALP I HEALTH WEEK PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the week of April 3- , 2023, is National Public Health Week, and the theme is `®Centering and
Celebrating Cultures in Health;" and
WHEREAS, our cultures have always shaped our health and we can learn from the communities we a
born into and build together with humility and openness; and i
WHEREAS, a person"s health status can differ drastically by zip code duo to differences in a community
context, environmental quality, access to education, access to health care, access to healthy food, and
equitable human services which impact an individual's direct and specific needs; and
WHEREAS, public health measures to control and eliminate infectious diseases, improve environmental
sanitation, and promote healthy lifestyle practices have been the greatest cause of improved health
status and increased life expectancy for the residents of New Hanover County® and
WHEREAS, preventable risk factors such as such as physical inactivity, poor nutrition, tobacco use, and
excessive alcohol use are leading causes of chronic disease; and six in ten United States (U.S.) adults have
a chronic disease and four in ten have two or more; and chronic diseases cause seven of every ten deaths
annually in the U.S.; and
WHEREAS, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners is committed to a continued emphasis on
prevention in public health, and to helping New Hanover County reach a better state of health through
actions outlined in the Healthy North Carolina 2030 objectives; and
WHEREAS, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners encourages all residents to recognize that
public health is working to reduce the spread of infectious diseases, protect citizens from environmental
threats at food and lodging institutions, promote healthy lifestyles to reduce health disparities, and
improve outcomes from chronic diseases, while increasing health literacy through health education
which helps in advancing self-sufficiency and sustainaility.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, in 2022 New Hanover County received 3,433 Child Protective Services reports with 1,980 of
those reports being accepted for investigation/assessment; and
WHEREAS, in 2022 in New Hanover County, 300 Child Protective Services reports were found to be in
need of ongoing services to ensure child safety and 129 children were placed in foster care; and
WHEREAS, all children deserve to have safe, stable, nurturing, and healthy homes and communities that
foster their well-being; and
WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect are public responsibility affecting both the current and future quality
of life of a state; and
WHEREAS, parents need support and resources to help cope with stress and nurture their children t
row to their full potential; and
WHEREAS, effective child abuse prevention strategies succeed because of partnerships created among
citizens, human service agencies, schools, faith communities, health care providers, civic organizations,
law enforcement agencies, and the business community; and

abuse and strengthen communities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners that Ap
2023 will be recognized as "Child Abuse Prevention Month" in New Hanover County. All citizen
community agencies, father groups, medical facilities, elected leaders and businesses are called upon
increase their participation in our efforts to support families, thereby preventing child abuse a
strengthening the community in which we live.
