VI. Data review
Marimer shared the demographic information that was presented to the NHC Commissioners.
North Carolina Data
The Latinx population in NC is over 1.1 million people and rising as of the 2020 census!
The Latinx population in NC has grown over 40% in the last 10 years and over 1400% since
1990
75,000 in 1990, 800,000 in 2010, 1.1 million today
New Hanover County Data
• Latinx individuals make up 6.2% of the population (and rising as of the 2020 census)
• This number has already increased to 7.7% as of 2021
2021 Snapshot
• Statewide, 10.7% of North Carolinas population is Hispanic or Latino, just over half the national
average, 18.7%.
• Approximately 6 out of 10 Hispanics living in NC are U.S born.
• Both U.S and foreign-born Latinos represent a diversity of cultural /ethnic origins
• As of 2020, buying power for Hispanics in NC was $23.8 billion
• The main four countries that comprise the Latino community are from Mexico, El Salvador,
Honduras, and Guatemala. Although they are seeing growing numbers from other countries like
Ecuador.
It was mentioned that although these numbers are high, there is a portion of the population that is not
counted. For example, the farm workers.
More demographic data can be searched on the https://carolinademography.cpc.unc.edu/ website.
The Language Access Collaborative did their own study. Marimer will share that data with us. The 2010
census demographers calculated an estimate of those that do not report to the Census.
Would like to get the demographic numbers of Hispanic/Latinos
Public schools
Voter Registration
VII. Nominations calendar workgroup
Want to shed a light on the good things that are done by Hispanics/Latinos
Helen will contact La Clínica Latina to see if they could help with this.
The committee is interested in finding other people who are interested in helping us. We could
invite them to attend our meetings, give a 5–10-minute presentation about themselves, and invite
them to help with special projects.
VIII. Cape Fear Latinos Festival
It was rescheduled to September 30 due to inclement weather.
We will have a table and there is a sign-up sheet for members to sign up.
A sign was made for the table.
A QR code has been created for the needs assessment survey that will be conducted during the
festival. We can use this survey at other events and when in the community. We will keep
statistics for each event that the QR code is used.
We will also share the link to the County Website. People can look at the calendar and minutes.
IX. Closing Comments
Gabriel proposed that we do a Hispanic/Latino Resource Fair in order to inform
Hispanics/Latinos of all the resources and businesses.
Gabriel will coordinate this.
Could be held twice a year.
Maybe we can do it as an extension of the Día de Reyes on January 6, 2024.
