Called to Order: Jvanete Skiba at 4:01 pm Quorum: Yes II. Approval of Agenda: Bernice Johnson and Deborah Maxwell III. Approval of Minutes: Linda Thomas and Patricia Smith IV. Public comments: No V. Old Business A) Planning Groups 1) Pine Forest Cemetery a. The Commission plans to attend its October meeting. b. The NHC Library has archived all its history to date. c. The cemetery needs our assistance to get them on the National Registry. Motion: The New Hanover County Commission on African American History, Heritage, and Culture will assist the Pine Forest Cemetery with researching and developing a plan to submit to the National Registry. Motioned by: Linda Thomas Seconded by: Deborah Maxwell All In Favor d. That area is already on the National Historic Registry. e. Patricia Smith has a contact who can provide insight into her experience getting the Southport Cemetery on the National Registry. 2) Civil Rights Trail Marker a. There is rehab work expected at Gregory Congregational Church and the Wilmington Journal. NHCCAAHHC Minutes August 13, 2023 b. Virtual Trail Markers are important to North Carolina but have no significant event. Williston High School may meet this criterion. c. The application deadline is September 29, 2023, to submit for round five of the Civil Rights Markers. d. Travis will inquire whether a location can have more than one marker. e. The commission will form a subcommittee to identify which marker to submit in the sixth round (October March), due in April 2024. f. As the commission plans to go down the list of prospective markers and complete them all. VI. Announcements ththth A) The 80 Conference of the NCAAP will be held September 28 30 at the Wilmington Convention Center. B) North Carolina Project Lead will be held September 15 16 at the Wilmington Convention Center. C) DEI Awards will be held on August 11, 2023. th D) The Equity and Inclusion Summit will be held on September 14th & 15. VII.
