New Hanover Hispanic/Latino Commission
November 28, 2023 5:00 PM
l. Call to Order: Meeting called to order at 5:03 p.m.
Members present: Dr. Andres Afanador, Flor Bautista, Dr. Amanda Boomershine, Gabriel Guerra, Dr.
Susanna Lopez-Legentil, Maria del Carmen Rodriguez Morales, Dr. Edelmira Segovia, Helen Tarokic
Members absent: Gustavo Rodea

II. Approve Agenda
Motion to approve agenda. Andres Motion. Maria Seconded it.
lll. Approve Minutes
Motion to approve September 26, 2023 minutes. Amanda Motion. Andres Seconded it.
IV. Guest - Marimer Rodriguez McKenzie.
North Carolina Council.
Attended first meeting in October.
Working on Health, Language Access, Legislative and Economic opportunity, and Education.
Shared copy of the 2022-2023 Recommendations Report
The next meeting will be on February 8, 2024. Public, in person or via Zoom
V. Chair Comments
We have more unity and more communication.
Calls come in for boards for different committees. We need to use the networks within our own
communities to have lists of respected Latino leaders to chair in these committees.
VI. Committee Updates
1. Information and Civic Engagement Subcommittee (Helen, Gustavo, Edel)
a. Helen is Chair and Gustavo is Vice Chair
b. Very broad focus on immigration. Also discussed more outreach.
c. Helen will be at the Cultural Festival at the Career Readiness Academy at Mosleys.
2. Advocacy for Public Education Subcommittee (Amanda, Andres, Flor)
a. Met and have 3 recommendations
i. A welcome center as an introduction to the school system
ii. A School System Liaison position
iii. Governor to require bilingual and bicultural interpretation services
1. Schools qualify to apply for endowment grants
2. Novant has experience. It can be expanded to be used in schools.
3. Language Equity Subcommittee (Gabriel, Maria, Susanna)
a. The subcommittee was not able to meet.
b. Gabriel will speak with Marimer to see what she is doing and what we want to do.
VII. Resource Fair
Gabriel reported that the date is January 20, 2023 from 11:00am to 2:00pm
Once all organizations have been selected, he will begin to coordinate set-up
Want to provide children with activities to do while parents visit tables.
VII. Old Business
1. Survey: We will be looking into a better way to collect information.

2. Commission: two open seats; will find out if the 1 round of applicants is being considered
VIII. Other Business
1. Nominations Working Group
a. Met last week with Maria Van de Bovenkemp, from Clínica Latina,and her team.
b. They have created a chronological order list.
c. Plan to submit nominations

IX. Public Comments

Additional Comments:
Add to award nominations
(Recognizing area commercial real estate projects and also honors local women.)
Broadway for a Better World 2024 Application is now open. To be considered for an award in
the January 2024 cycle, applicants must submit their grant application by January 8th, 2024.
For representation of the NHC Hispanic/Latino Commission at community events, there must be
at least three members of the board in attendance.
