Chair Comments Public information on the Commission and the Language Equity websites have been updated to reflect the correct contact information of the Hispanic/Latino Commission members. Marimer McKenzie has been officially sworn as one of the Governor Advisory Council Members to represent our region and connect with us as the Commission on the alignment and the work that they do. We will invite her to come to our November meeting to brief us. The Wilmington Bus 100 only had two Latinos (Chris Montero and Edelmira Segovia) represented. That is well below the representation. o The Wilmington Business Journal provide an annual list of the most influentialmembers of our Wilmington Community. o The editorial staff of the Wilmington Business Journal is the one that reviews, nominates and drafts that list. Chancellor Volety had a meeting with a group of twenty Latino professionals representing education, nonprofits and public safety. o What came out of that session was that we need to build bridges. There is a community, there are resources but generally they are not talking to each other. o Marimer talked a little about the language equity piece. o We would like to bring that team that is working on the language equity piece just to brief us. The third drive of the FaithActionID was just completed on Saturday and Sunday with the collaboration many of our community members. It was a great event. o We completed just under 300 IDs over the weekend. We will have the official count later. o The NHC Sheriff supported us with the kids IDs on Saturday. We will have to get a count from them. o Faith Action International collects data for each one of their drives (across the states not just North Carolina) which is reported annually. They looked at the gender and nationality of the countries that applied for the IDs and their numbers reflectedthat the largest number of IDs were from the following countries (in order from largest to smallest) 1. Mexican 2. Honduran 3. Guatemalan 4. Venezuelan 5. Colombia They used this data to also compare the number of first-time applicants to those that were renewing. V. Committee Updates 1. Information and Civic Engagement Subcommittee (Edel, Michel, Gustavo, Helen) Were not able to meet. 2. Advocacy for Public Education Subcommittee (Flor, Amanda, Andres) Andres and Amanda met and took minutes. They talked about issues in public education, made a list of action items and are working toward it. Andres has the minutes. There is a lot of work to be done. Andres will be the Chair and Amanda will be the Vice-Chair. 3. Language Equity Subcommittee (Susanna, Maria, Gabriel) - Were not able to meet but we spoke and chose Gabriel as Chair and Susanna as Vice-Chair. a. Will speak with Marimer and Amy about thedata that they have been collecting this year on language access that will be presented to the City and County in January. VI. New Business Hispanic Resource Fair Gabriel has started the preparations by looking for a site. He has reached outto two Community Centers (MLK Center and Davis Center). He started a list oforganizations that will be invited to the resource fair. He will send it out to commission members to see if we have any other organizations that we want to add. The chairs would be set up in the middle ofthe room for the public to sit and the organization tables would be set up around the border of the room. Each organization will be given five minutes or so to talk about their programs and the public will beableto go to their table (table numbers will be given) and ask further questions. We cannot exclude something on Immigration. Several ideas were presented, such as, a handout with resources on Immigration, etc. Make sure that the information is disseminated in both English and Spanish. Need to start promoting the event in November by reaching out to news stationsand radio. We will also promote it through our contacts and email. Need to set up an agenda for the day. The Salvation Army has been good about providing food, snacks, water, etc. Flor stated that transportation tends to be an issue during these events so Port City United can help with that with advanced notice. We want to time it before the next FaithActionIDevent so that we can market it. The date that we are looking at is January 20, 2024. Maybe do it from 12:00 to 2:00pm or 12:00 to 3:00pm. VII. Nominations Work Group Edel met with Maria Van de Bovenkemp, from Clínica Latina, and her team and they have agreed to take the lead to work on nominations. They will meet on November 9, 2023 at 8:00am and Edel will send a Zoom invite to everyone. At the meeting they should bring a draft of calendar year of the nomination cycle including the ones we previously mentioned (40 under 40, WILMA Awards, a couple others.
