a new position. Holden Shepard will be taking his place starting August 1.
Review and Approval of Minutes
Teresa Smith had distributed the May 2022 LEPC meeting minutes by email prior to the meeting. Kevin Cowan made a motion to approve the minutes. Tommy Batson seconded. The minutes were
approved.
Presentation - Allen Hancock, NC DOT
Allen will send the slides to Teresa to distribute to the LEPC.
Following storms, contaminated water is an issue! How many times do you see pictures of people wading unprotected through flood water? Who as walked though contaminate water without
protection? You need protection. Water from storms and runoff is not clean. Every time we have a storm, contaminants get in the water: chemicals (Oil/petroleum-based), natural (animal
carcasses, feces), microorganisms, heavy metals (mercury). Contaminants can enter the water through accidents and deliberate actions. Many times, these contaminants will settle to the
bottom, but storms will stir them up. Assume there are toxins in the mud. Listeria can cause sores that take years to heal. Others have gotten rashes from exposure to contaminated water.
DOT talks about four classes of water: Non-contaminated, Biological, Chemical, and Physical. Only the first does not require personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE includes waders
for working around or in water and latex gloves. For deeper water or diving, dry suits, full face masks, and hoods are recommended. For decontamination, they use a bleach/water solution
from a spray container or garden type sprayer. Decontaminate ALL reusable items/gear/tools with bleach/water solution, following with a clean water rinse.
The Cape Fear River is not very clean. There are petroleum products in the water. Unless you are in a swimming pool, wear PPE in the water.
