Seconded it.
VI. Committee Updates
1. Information and Civic Engagement Subcommittee (Helen, Gustavo, Edel)
First meeting planned for Friday at 4:00pm on Zoom. Are inviting to have people who are
not in a subcommittee to attend.
2. Advocacy for Public Education Subcommittee (Amanda, Andres, Flor, Natalie)
Have been meeting monthlyfor a while.
Last meeting was spent discussing what they want to present from their subcommittee.
Have running Google document.
Most of focus has been public (K-12). Grade level appropriate classes.
Have invited speakers to meet with them
th
serves only 11th and 12 graders) but they want to start reaching out to earlier grades. Reach out
to Angel Garcia. There is a discussion to see if a Pilot to expand Mi Casa to middle school
particularly for Williston Middle School which feeds New Hanover High School. Chris Madden
was an advocate for Juntos and was advocating to have Juntos come to Williston Middle School.
-year term.
Amanda mentioned that she found out this weekend from a parent, has not been discussed in
subcommittee yet, that Ms. Bradford from the School Board cancelled the Latino Student
symposium organized by New Hanover High School and held at Cape Fear Community College
in late April orMay stating that it is discriminatory and segregating. This is where they had
leaders in the community come talk to students about hiring, education, etc. Ms. Bradford pulled
the plug on that event this year. They usually pull ESL students not just Latinos to come together
at CFCC and have speakers come in.
Edel presented last year and it was catered towards minority communities, non-main stream. It
shed light on the culture and professionals in the field. It was a great session for students to talk
about their realities. A number of different identities were part of that day. Edel would have to go
brown, it is an umbrella of diversity. It is not an exclusive event. You can tell that by the
students.
3. Language Equity Subcommittee (Gabriel, Maria, Susanna)
Janeth chose to be on this committee.
Maria brought copies of the survey to have members help finalize this before sending it to
Linda for approval so that Gabriel can send it to all non-profits.
The goal of the survey is to gather more data so that we can get a better stance where there
are barriers. Gabriel has been doing research because there is a lot more that has to be done
then just translating documents.
VII. Old Business
None at this time.
VIII. New Business
We will be presenting what each subcommittee is working on at the Annual meeting with the
Commission. Do not have the date yet but it would likely be in the Fall.
Look over the list of everything that we have noted in the minutes for your review. We will
also send the combined minutes for the year.
In February, Marimer came to speak to us as a guest speaker to talk about her role with the
had drawn up and passed this Resolution in Support of Immigrants. They were asked to go
back to their cities and counties and to have them approve similar resolutions in support of
immigrants. I found that Fayetteville and Carrboro had already done so. Also believe that
Wake and someone else had. Every member on this board needs to read this Resolution. It
has been assigned to the Information and Civic Engagement Subcommittee to look through
it.
