Local Authors Event
Emily Colin discussed the idea of hosting a local authors event with the library. NaNoWriMo is a
National Novel Writing month that challenges anyone to write 50,000 words of a novel in thirty
days. Each November people worldwide begin writing. The concept is to end the month as
novelists.
Emily is working with Christine Ingram (NHCPL Local Interest Librarian) to plan a Local Authors
event to tie into NaNoWriMo this November. Day one would be Reader focused where
authors would have tables and sell their books. Day two would be a writer’s event with a
scavenger hunt.
The first brainstorming meeting will be held at the main library on July 10th at 5:30 pm. If you
are interested in attending, please email Emily at emilyacolin@gmail.com
Seabreeze Series
A historical marker commemorating Seabreeze and Freeman Beach was dedicated on May 31st
near the intersection of Carolina Beach Rd and S. Seabreeze Road. Seabreeze was a resort for
black people during the 1920’s when other beach resorts were racially segregated. The beach
featured hotels, cottages, restaurants, a dance hall, and long-term housing.
The Pleasure Island Library is hosting several programs to highlight the Seabreeze community
and their descendants.
The first program had 23 visitor’s turnout to hear about the history of the area and answer
questions. Two more programs will be hosted during June. One will be from the NC Aquarium
to discuss the ecology of the area and the other will be from Chris Eaton regarding the
genealogy of the community.
Database Spotlight
Pleasure Island Branch Mgr., Jess Willetts presented Tumble Books to the Board.
Tumble Book is a database of eBook collections for K-6th grade kids. It provides books, puzzles,
