Adjournment Next meeting: November 19, 2024 NEW HANOVER COUNTY PARKS CONSERVANCY BOARD PAGE 2 REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 20, 2024 ASSEMBLY The Parks Conservancy Board held its regular meeting on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at 5:30 pm at the Airlie Cottage. Present: Rex Burford, Dana Lingenfelser, Dave Ellegood, Hillary Stevens, Susanne Werner, Sean Olds, Nivine Richie, Mark Ihnat, and Dane Scalise Absent: Cassidy Santaguida Staff: Tanya Gurganious, Janine Powell, and Latashia Smith WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES Janine welcomed everyone in attendance and called the meeting to order. She introduced the new board member Hillary Stevens and asked her to tell the board about herself. The board members individually introduced themselves to Hillary. Janine turned the meeting over to Mark Ihnat. Mark asked if there were any board members that provided notice of their absence. No board members had provided notice. Mark asked if everyone had a chance to review the minutes and asked if there were any changes. Dane Scalise noticed that the first line of the minutes cited the previous board meeting date and it should have been June. Susanne and Nivine noticed their first names were spelled incorrectly and wanted to note that it should be changed. Rex was marked absent instead of excused. That change was also noted. The following motion was made: MOTION: Susanne Werner MOVED; Sean Olds SECONDED, to approve the June minutes as amended and corrected. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Financial Report. Liability and Equity - $81,472.30 Income/Donations - $305 Plant an Azalea $200 Pump Track Staff Report. Janine gave an update on some of the grants that were applied for. The first grant is Cape Fear Garden Club through their garden tour disbursement. This grant will allow 10 Live Oaks to be planted around the playground at Kings Grant Park for shade. The trees will come from Penderlea Farms and are descendants of the Airlie Oak. The other grant is through the Cape Fear Garden Club Beautification endowment. This grant will be used to plant more trees at Smith Creek Park to create a canopy that will provide shade. One hundred long leaf pine seedlings and a variety of larger trees will be planted around the lake. Finishing up an application to the WMPO which handles all of the DOT Trails for the region. th Also applying to extend the trail connecting to the Cross City trail and will pick up on 17 and College and will go up to Piner Road. Trails are very expensive. It is a $3,000,00 project. Two more trails are in the works. One from Red Cedar to Publix on Middle Sound Loop Road and then from Middle Sound Loop to the Mendenhall neighborhood. The end NEW HANOVER COUNTY PARKS CONSERVANCY BOARD PAGE 3 REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 20, 2024 goal is to be able to travel seamlessly throughout the city of Wilmington into New Hanover County. This will get more cars off the road and give people alternate safe passages. Smith Creek Phase 2 and Northern Regional Park are still in the stormwater permitting phase. Tanya gave an update on Echo Farms. The 5 additional tennis courts are still in the permitting phase. She has seen an influx of people coming to Echo Farms since Holly Tree has closed. Old Business/New Business. Mark asked if the next Food Truck Rodeo had been scheduled. Janine will come up with a date. It is usually held in April at Ogden Park. She mentioned to position and help with coordinating the vendors. Susanne volunteered to help. Dave volunteered as her second. Dane Scalise wanted to highlight that in the last budget, the county created a new position called a Sustainability Manager and there is some work in progress about what all that position will accomplish. The general goal is to try and expand green space, preserve territory in our community, and help with the flooding concerns. He would love to see some of our parks expanded in the county and hoped this individual might be able to help with that. Mark recalled that in the previous minutes, it stated that the board should elect a nominating committee and wanted to know what positions were available. Janine expressed the biggest need right now is for a president. Dana Lingenfelser nominated herself to be the president. Janine made a motion for the Dana Lingenfelser to be president, Mark Ihnat to remain vice president, and Sean Olds to remain as treasurer. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. ADJOURNMENT Since there was no further business there was a motion to adjourn. MOTION: Rex Burford MOVED; SECONDED by Mark Ihnat. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 5:59 pm.
