Library Advisory Board
October 17, 2024
Minutes
Assembly:
The Library Advisory Board met in Regular Session on Thursday, October 17th at 1:30 pm at the
Main Library.

Approval of Previous Minutes
The minutes from the last board meetings on August 15th & September 19th, 2024, were sent to
the board prior to the meeting for review.
Motion: Shawn Assael MOVED, SECONDED by Ellen Haragan, to accept the minutes of the
8/15/24 meeting as written. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
Motion: Shawn Assael MOVED, SECONDED by Emily Colin, to accept the minutes of the
9/19/24 meeting as written. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
Correspondence
None received.
Friends of the Library
Tom Brimberry and other FOL members held their downtown walking tour of past library locations
today.
They are also working on their slate of officers.
Library Foundation
Board will meet again in November.
Director’s Report
Dana Conners reported the following:
Projects
Project Grace: Collection updates are underway. We are weeding the current collection and
will spend $400,000 from book sale proceeds to purchase new materials.
Northchase: Final selections were made on décor & furnishings. 1 million will be spent on
collection materials. We have received 16 submissions for the public art piece.
Staff
Vacancy: Library Associate in Local History @ Main Library
New Hires:

• Marketing & Tech Support Librarian – Tiffany Boeglen starts October 29th
• Library Assistant @ Main Library – Nelly Martinez Ruvalcaba starts October 29th
• Local History Grant-funded positions – 4 Interns hired to start on October 15th
Continuous Learning:
Staff Development Day: We were closed to the public on Monday 10/14 for Staff Development
Training. We took to mandatory county training classes (Agility in our Dynamic Service and
Timekeepers). All staff also took the Clifton Strength Finders course, and reviewed our results
as a group.
Other
• Programs
o Fiction to Fashion 11/9 @ Azalea Station
o Cape Fear Book Festival 11/22-23
• Hispanic Services Needs Assessment: CASA is completing surveys and interviews. Data
will be processed for recommendations soon.
• Policy Review: Prior to the Nov. meeting, Dana will send out library policies for review.
• New Resource: Dana was able to negotiate a fair price to access Star News 1948 – 1994.
• Hurricane Helene: To assist displaced patrons, we are waiving the cost for a 3-month
non-resident fee for those affected.
Committee Reports
Reconsideration Request committee consisted of Lynn Kozik, Tiffany Salter, & Ellen Haragan.
The library did receive a reconsideration request from a patron.
Book Title: When Dinosaurs Die: A guide to understanding death.
Dana provided the board with the patrons Request form, a copy of the page in the book in
question, and the library’s policy.
The recommendation from the committee was to move the book from the picture book section
to the Juvenile Non-fiction section.
Motion: Scott Dodd MOVED, SECONDED by Harriet Smith, to accept the reconsideration from
the committee to catalog the book in Juv. Non-fiction. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED
UNANIMOUSLY.

Officer Election
The nominated slate of officers is as follows:
• Chair – Patricia Lawler
• Vice Chair – Lynn Kozik
• Secretary – Shaun Assael.
Motion: Ann Clinton MOVED, SECONDED by Ellen Haragan, to accept nominated slate of
officers. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
Database Spotlight
Main Library Branch Mgr., Jimi Rider presented Films on Demand

Other
2025 Board Meetings
In 2024, the board held meetings at each library site and had a tour. We will make a schedule
to do that again this year.

The board adjourned the meeting at 2:45
