Chair Comments Recognized positive outcomes this month. V. Committee Updates 1. Information and Civic Engagement Subcommittee Drafting resolution for the immigrant community. This local effort for NHC stems from Gov. Cooper’s efforts. They will try to have a draft for the next meeting. They will reach out to the senior resource center for ways to engage elderly Latino community. Emily Ford is the contact for the senior resource center. 2. Advocacy for Public Education Subcommittee- They skipped their meeting this month, but Amanda continued to advocate for bus routes. The issue with Greenville Loop was resolved. The solution proposed for Mosley (kids that were previously placed at Johnson before Head Start was cut in the budget) was to create a community bus stop. This still required some families to travel 6miles, many without cars. The committee recommends that if they are going to offer PreK, they need to provide transportation as well. The Latino Alliance will be hosting a One Community Dialogue with NHCS Superintendent to share and talk about advocacy. All members of the HLC are welcome. 3. Language Equity Subcommittee Surveys revealed that trust is lacking in the community to reach out to organizations for help. The committee plans to have a resource fair so some of the trust barriers can be broken down. Maria plans to visit churches to get information out as well. They will take the next 2 months to receive more surveys and summarize results. VI. Old Business 1. H/L Commission Logo Design- Lambeth is waiting for updates from designer and the county is checking on rights to the logo etc. 2. NHC Commissioners Presentation- The presentation to the NHC Commissioners was a positive experience. Several commissioners offered supportive comments, reflecting that they had read the report, were engaged, and impressed with the Hispanic Latino Commission's active role." The HLC also accepted the proclamation for Hispanic Heritage Month. Zapple mentioned that the county’s senior resource center offers dental care for elderly. This brought up the question of why the senior resource center is not utilized by Spanish speakers. There was a request to have the annual report presented to the commissioners be posted on the HLC website. 3. Cape Fear Latino Festival- Members reported there was great representation from the HLC, The You Can Vote booth registered 16 voters, many immigration law firms all had tables there, and data collected regarding the highest needs in the Hispanic/Latino community can help guide our focus as a commission. It confirmed we should add a healthcare subcommittee. We will discuss this at the next meeting. Some suggested it be better promoted next year, to get early approval to advertise in schools from the Outreach Office, and to have a schedule of the performances for the festival posted earlier than the day before. VII. New Business 1. NHC Latin Resource Festival- Suggestions were made for this to be on a Saturday in February at the MLK center, Maides Park, or El Cuerpo. 2.
